The composition of Krzysztof Penderecki's four string quartets is marked by an idiosyncratic interruption: the first two experimental, improvisatory quartets were composed in swift succession in the 1960s. The third and fourth quartets followed substantially later, but were also written in relatively quick succession in the years 2008 and 2016. The quartet cycle as a whole is exemplary of the composerÂ’s two extensive creative phases, thus displaying a stylistic change that is in a class of its own in the history of music. The very short unnumbered quartet Der unterbrochene Gedanke [The Broken Thought], written 1988 in the middle of the 'quartet break', appears as an only too apt commentary.

Per Norgard FOR A CHANGEThe title 'For a Change' refers to the Chinese 'Book of Changes' ('I Ching'), which has been consulted in situations of choice for millenia. In the I Ching, 64 states of being determine the full cycle of the phases of life. From these I selected four, the sequence of which progresses from a situation from which there is apparently no solution, to a (temporary) relief. In the first movement 'Thunder repeated, the Image of Shock', a vicious circle of claustrophobic, closed circuits is represented by the tom-tom part. This is followed by tam-tams and wood sounds, but returns full-circle to the tom-toms.The second movement 'The taming Power of the small' has its origins in the violence of the first movement, but this time lets it resolve in a long glide upwards which stars with voice sounds 'borrowed' from the Beatles' 'Revolution no 9' which are then transmitted to the other instruments. The third movement is 'The Gentle, The Penetrating' in which lyrical poetry dominates with gentle bell-like sounds and delicate tunes. Finally the sovereign, many-layered world of rhythm triumphs in the fourth movement: 'Towards Completion. Fire over Water', the main movement of the work.'For a Change' was premiered on 27.2. 1983 with the Sealand Symphony Orchestra conducted by Tamas Veto. Soloist was Gert Mortensen whom the work is dedicated.

Sibelius's oeuvre contains four string quartets. They appeared over a long time span and in different phases of his professional career. Most of his early compositions were chamber music, and he composed his three earliest quartets (in E flat major (JS 184, 1885), A minor (JS 183, 1889), B flat major (Op. 4, 1890)) around his study years. They remained unprinted during his lifetime, and the string quartet in E flat major was also not performed in public. The quartet in D minor Voces intimae op. 56, on the other hand, was completed in London in the spring of 1909, and Sibelius wrote to his wife Aino: It became wonderful. Just the kind that raises a smile on one's face even at the moment of death. Voces intimae was published in the same year. Even later, Sibelius seemed to be very satisfied with his composition, for he wrote in his diary: It is generally claimed to be my best work. I do not think quite that, but it does belong among my best ones..

Rheinberger's Mass in A Major is a work that ist easy to perform. Making no use of polyphonic developments, it remains within a harmonic style that is lightened by brief imitative phases. The organ accompaniment serves as a tonal support and expands the three-part writing into four parts. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5012600.

Matthew Erpelding tells the story of a child's bedtime with brilliantly crafted vocal lines scored for SSA choirs. Spoken from the point of view of the child, the song embodies phases of excited restlessness and energized curiosity. It concludes with a captivating section where each choir member sings a four-note figure at random to create the effect of waves of sleep washing over the child. An incredible addition to your treble choir repertoire!

Volume 19 of the Schutz Complete Edition brings together 21 very different compositions from various phases of Schutz's compositional output. The spectrum ranges from a short, two-part sacred concerto to a six-part cyclical psalm setting and large-scale polychoral concerto, from well-known works such as the Osterdialog to a completely unknown madrigalian composition, full of emotion, to a simple chorale setting. A particular challenge was posed by the ten works or versions of works which survive incomplete. Two of these, the Christmas concerto Ach Herr, du Schopfer aller Ding SWV 450a and Ein Kind ist uns geboren SWV 497, appear here for the first time in print. With both of these it turned out that it was possible to reconstruct the missing parts fully from available material. For the Ultima Verba Psalmi 23, Gutes und Barmherzigkeit SWV 95 and the two Nunc dimittis: Herr, nun lassest du deinen Diener SWV 432 and 433, the editor's reconstructions are presented, and likewise with the chorale movement In dich hab ich gehoffet, Herr SWV 446. The impressive Easter dialog Weib, was weinest du SWV 443 is one of the works which survives incomplete. In order to give an impression of how the whole work might actually have sounded in the complete form as planned by Schutz, the Appendix to the volume contains a reconstruction of the four-part vocal setting of the missing final chorus, based on the surviving figured bass. The magnificent Gesang der drei Manner im feurigen Ofen (Song of the three men in the burning fiery furnace) SWV 448 from the book of the prophet Daniel, the original source of which is lost, is critically discussed and published with various possibilities for scoring.

This world premiere recording features two new choral collections. The Fire of Love sets the words of fourteenth-century English mystic Richard Rolle, who depicted the soul’s movement towards God through the phases of heat, sweetness, and song, with song being the ultimate expression of the soul. For the second collection, Patrick has set nine of William Blake’s Songs of Innocence, and the fragile poetry gives rise to tender and heartfelt music. Somehow, I knew that I and The Same Stream needed to collaborate on a recording with Patrick Hawes. This recording grew out of our shared desire to collaborate on some new scores. Over the months that ensued from our initial meeting, the music on this CD grew out of meaningful exchanges between a composer and a conductor… Both works, The Fire of Love and Songs of Innocence, represent settings of profound poets that capture some essences of lives lived. But what made an impact upon us all was the honesty that Patrick Hawes knitted into these scores. Working with him on this recording was inspirational for us all. His passion for communicating through sound was radiantly clear to us, and it is our hope that his passion for these words by Richard Rolle and William Blake become alive in your ears and your heart. — James Jordan Click here to download the CD booklet Learn more about this album from Patrick Hawes, James Jordan, and The Same Stream in the video below:.
