The work “Fragments” is an extremely powerful and energetic Concertino for trombone, full of different tonal colours and based on two motifs that are broken down into their fragments and processed further. The slightly playful main motif is presented by the soloist after an imposing introduction and gradually develops jazzy elements without abandoning the contemporary spirit. Throughout the work, the last three notes of the introductory motif are presented both as a short, shrill fragment and as a lyrical theme, which supports the constant alternation between leggero and marcato. An ostinato, which is carried through all registers, gives the work the necessary drift and serves as a common thread to connect the different parts. “Fragments” was commissioned by the Luxembourg Ministry of Culture in collaboration with the “De klenge Maarnicher Festival” and was a compulsory piece for the final round of the “1st Michel Becquet International Trombone Competition”.

Toshio Hosokawa studied in Tokyo and in Germany (with Isang Yun, among others). His first opera 'Vision of Lear' had its first performance at the 1998 Munich Festival, where it was highly praised as 'a work inspired by the meeting of East and West, opening the way to a new musical world'. This bridge between East and West is a characteristic feature of his compositions and is reflected particularly in his choice of instruments. The five miniatures, with their suitably intimate, dark instrumentation, throw light on various aspects of Hamlet's mother, who is both a guilty and a tragic, helpless figure.

For a Hungarian composer, writing music set to the poems of Attila József is no small feat. In this series, György Kurtág (* 1926) took on this immense challenge in a unique way even within his own oeuvre: the loneliness of the unaccompanied, single voice line simultaneously evokes the musical world of Hungarian folk songs or even 17th-century monody. The poems - rather the fragments, the seeds of poetry abandoned by the poet - capture strong, realistic images and human situations that are characteristic of Attila József. As he is wont to do with his compositions, Kurtág transforms these poetic images into equally unforgettable musical images, drawing an atmosphere ofcontemplation, despair, boredom, happiness, and fear of death with just a few sounds. This composition was premiered on October 26, 1982 in Budapest by Adrienne Csengery, the recipient of the work s dedication. (Hungaroton HCD 31821).
