Look no further for the quintessential concert opener for your young band! A powerful opening fanfare leads to a warm and flowing theme introduced by the clarinets. As the music develops, a secondary theme is introduced, proud and heroic in nature. This theme is fully explored amid varied harmonic structures and driving rhythms. Finally, the music ends as it began, with the powerful fanfare presented even stronger this time. Varied textures, memorable themes, and fresh, contemporary harmonies hold the interest of the listener, while providing some valuable teaching opportunities. A strong choice for concert or festival performance!

Written during the winter of 2007, this work is a metaphor of the three stages of a short but intense love story. The first movement is called Poniente. This is the name of a rainy wind that comes from west. In this sense, west is not only the place where the sun sets, but where night begins. The first movement represents the beginning, the happiness and freshness of something new. The violin evokes freshness and spontaneity over the constant rhythm of the guitar, which plays the higher voice. While the violin signs happily, the guitar, instead of being just its accompaniment, plays the role of a counterpoint with its rhythmical and constant theme. The second movement is called Largo-Balada-Largo and it's divided in two different parts. In the first one, guitar plays alone, reflexive and slow, representing the moments of loneliness of the one that waits for the lovers reunion. In the second movement, violin and guitar begin a dialogue where the violin plays a sweet yearning ballad, while the guitar answers as a baroque counterpoint. At the end, calm comes back, as in the first part of the second movement. The third movement is called Danza ritual and it is the most violent of the three parts. It represents the lovers reunion, the resolution of all the controlled excitement. It's the flame that consumes quickly but intensely. At the end of this part, the violin reintroduces the main theme of the first movement, but with a variation, more intense and dramatic. This dramatic and intense quality is also due to the guitar ostinato, which ends in a hysteric trill. This leads us again to the first part, ending the third movement and this work in a sudden setback, as an interrogation tag.

Alan Lee Silva's Northwestern Skies?is lyrical and fresh,? with his signature open and expressive style. Young string orchestras will sound rich and full with this sweeping composition.
From the opening fanfare to the final ensemble gesture, Northwestern Skies is an engaging musical journey with expressive ensemble phrases and challenging section features. The A theme at m. 9, a recurring heroic statement, provides an opportunity to develop solid tone production and intonation in sustained forte passages. The B theme at m. 17, enters quietly and features singing, legato lines and delicate accompaniment. The connected countermelodies in both the A and B sections should be balanced under the main melody. More instrtuments are added to the melody in m. 25, building to the return of the A theme in m. 33.
The lower strings carry the C theme in m. 49, supported by tutti figures in the upper strings. All sections come together in m. 56 to a ritardando into the Maestoso section, setting up a grand ensemble statement in m. 57-58. The moving legatolines at m. 59 and the aggressive figures at m. 61 propel the piece to its final build.
The Coda section at m. 65 begins with a variation of the B melody in the violas and then the violins over a dominant pedal point in the lower strings. Commanding tutti statements of the A theme at m. 69 end the piece with power and excitement.

This outstanding original from Larry Clark can be played any time of year! A vigorous theme moves through all the sections and violas combine with second violins for prominent solo passages. A section in minor adds to the drama as strong rhythmic chords give way to a subdued tremolo in the first violins, reminiscent of Vivaldi's Winter This music reaches a level of intensity your players and audience will love.Out of the Winter is a musical depiction of the many moods of winter from its harsh storms to its simple beauty. The composition is based on a central main theme that is musically developed throughout the composition presented in and out of major and minor keys. The main theme begins right away without introduction and is set to depict the simple delicate beauty of a light falling snow. The theme is then developed in the minor key using simple contrapuntal techniques that give the composition a fresh sound for pieces at this grade level. The aggressive development of the piece is a musical description of a powerful winter storm. The tension of this section is built to a climax using simple divisi in the strongs and some poly-chordal harmonic techniques that give way to a final return of the main theme to complete the piece.Special care should be given to exaggerating the contrast between the two diverse sections of the piece. The main theme should be light and uplifting. The second section with the theme in minor should have an ominous presence, but still be reminiscent of the original light main theme. As with all of my compositions at this grade level, adjust the tempo to fit the ability level of your students. It is hope that this piece helps to reinforce the concepts of good musicianship which you are trying to instill in your students. Bowings should be used as a guide and should be adjusted to your needs. It has been my pleasure to have had the opportunity to write this piece. I hope that you and your students find it useful for your program.

Composer Yukiko Nishimura presents Songbird, written for string orchestra in her signature fresh compositional style. After a short introduction, the main theme is a Siciliano-like melody, a dance in 6/8 time, followed by a brilliant and lively section. The melody makes use of long phrasing balanced by many wonderful countermelodies.Songbird is composed in a standard ABA form. After a short introduction the main theme is a siciliano-like melody, which is a dance in 6/8 time. A brilliant and lively second section follows in m. 41. The melody has a long phrasing, and many of the countermelodies are hiding in each part. From m. 106, there is a short coda, where the tempo becomes increasingly faster until the end. The most important thing to consider when performing this music is to feel the beat as duple time.
