Well-chosen music is an essential adjunct to the dignity and reverence of funerals and acts of remembrance, comforting those who mourn, and shining light upon the personality of the departed person. Among these fifteen new arrangements, organists will find a wealth of material from which to select the right piece appropriate to the occasion. There are classics such as Mendelssohn's O rest in the Lord and Handel's Dead March from Saul, romantic masterpieces like Elgar's Nimrod and Mahler's Adagietto, as well as a contemporary favourite, Candle in the Wind, which featured so memorably at the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales. A leading arranger and teacher for the organ, John Norris has also included his own Improvisation on Brother James' Air, an arrangement of Sibelius's Finlandia ('Be still, my soul'), and a novelty item The Broken Melody by Auguste van Biene. The collection concludes, appropriately, with Stanford's uplifting Nunc Dimittis from the Evening Service in C.

Funeral music plays an important role in music history for the articulation of grief and sorrow is an essential task of music. The important German organ composer Harald Genzmer (born in 1909) wrote his 'Musik der Trauer' in 2001, deeply affected by the death of his wife. The music is full of emotion and sentiment, expressing grief, sorrow, desperation, but also fierce rebellion against the inescapability of fate. At the end, the motif 'Christ ist erstanden' can be heard as an expression of Christian hope.

Taking as a basis the events at the funeral service for Pope John Paul I, the conclave, the inauguration of the new pope, and the visit of Benedict XVI at the Synagogue of Cologne, through Benedicere - Litanei, Helmschrott presents a piece of 'experienced music'. He translates his experiences into music - which is exemplified in the All Saints' Day litany that was heard again and againat the festivities in Rome, or the shofar which was played in Cologne. He sees his work as a symbol of what he has experienced and an invocation of the past, as an appeal for a better future.

Gounod's classic piece, arranged for double bass, with piano accompaniment. The music in the beginning tells the listener that two of the members of the Marionette troupe have had a duel and one of them has been killed. A party of pallbearers is organised and the procession sets out for the cemetery in march time. The piece soon takes on a more cheerful spirit, for some of the troupe, wearied with the march, seek consolation at a wayside inn, where they refresh themselves and also descant upon the many virtues of their late companion. At last they get into place again and the procession enters the cemetery to the march rhythm -- the whole closing with the bars intended to reflect upon the briefness and weariness of life, even for marionettes.

Otto M. Schwarz was asked by a friend to compose a chorale for the funeral of his child. Lux Aeterna (The Eternal Light) is actuallypart of the requiem mass, but in this composition, there is no reference to the original Latin text. People who recount near-death experiences often report a bright light. The music moves back and forth between passages that are sad, optimistic, and imploring in nature, posing questions that cannot be answered. The end of the piece comes, however, with a conciliatory major chord that reflectsthe calm and warmth of this light that promises redemption.

French composer, Charles Gounod (1818-1893) was a prominent in his day, best remembered for his Ave Maria and his opera, Faust. 1854 saw the premiere of his Solemn Mass, also known as the St. Cecilia Mass. This work fully established Gounod as a noteworthy composer. Despite being a minor composer to us today, Gounod was famed in his day, so much so that at his funeral, Camille Saint-Saens played the organ and Gabriel Faure conducted. Gounod's Solemn Mass proves the composer's extraordinary talent and caught the attention of much of Paris when it was first performed. Famous recordings include that of the Chorus of Radio France with the New Philharmonia Orchestra. For all aspiring choirs, Gounod's St. Cecilia Mass is an imperative, sublime addition to the repertoire.
