Inspired by the Slavonic Dances of Czech master AntonÃn Dvořák, Joseph Compello has written his own Furiant, a Bohemian dance, usually in triple meter with frequently shifting accents. This dazzling little original piece makes much of the contrast between 6/8 and 3/4. This variety of rhythmic pulse gives the piece tremendous energy and momentum. Slavic Scherzo is a selection that will energize the band and delight the audience in equal measure.

In 1878, on a commission from his publisher, Anton n Dvorák wrote a series of eight Slavonic dances. Modelled on Johannes Brahmsâ?? famous Hungarian Dances, although in contrast to Brahmsâ?? work, Dvorák used no original melodies. Wil van der Beek has arranged No. 7, a brisk 2/4 dance, as well as No. 8, a passionate, exuberant furiant in 3/4. In 1878 schreef Dvoøák op verzoek van zijn uitgever een serie van acht Slavische dansen. Daarbij zouden de beroemde Hongaarse dansen van Brahms als voorbeeld moeten dienen. Dvoøák had echter zijn eigen opvattingover het kunstzinnigvormgeven van (volks)dansen. Waar Brahms meerdere bestaande melodieën van dansen uitHongarije gebruikte, beperkte Dvoøák zich tot karakteristieke ritmische patronen van dansvormen uit zijn vaderland. Oorspronkelijk zijn de Slavischedansen gecomponeerd voor klavier vierhandig. Vrij spoedig maakte Dvoøák zelf een versie voor orkest, waarmee hij wereldroem vergaarde. English composer Malcolm Arnold wrote this compact sonatina in 1951 and it has since become one of his most popular instrumental works. As always with Arnold, it is impeccably crafted: the first movement, with it's wide leaps, the occasional incursion of a six-eight bar into the prevailing four-four, and the lightest of jazzy touches, lives up to its marking of Allegro con brio; while the second demonstates Arnold's love at this period of a gentle cantabile style where no shadows yet lurk. The finale is a wild dance in three-four time marked Furioso, and it is a distant cousin of the Czech Furiant. With its vigorous rhythms and cascading semiquavers, it has something of the open-air quality of Dvorak at his most buccolic - not a frequent influence on Malcolm Arnold, but a highly appropriate one in this charming (and challenging) little work. This version for clarinet solo with wind band has been arranged by saxophone player Alex Steurs.

Vol. 3 of 'Die frohliche Violine' pursues the same musical and technical goals as the first two volumes. It contains a detailed introduction to the flat keys, C major key as well as the 2nd and 3rd positions. The last chapter takes up the subject matter of the first chapters again in a more demanding form and with longer charming pieces, giving an insight into 'virtuoso' violin technique.

After my work 'Furiant' of 2007, another guitar solo work has been written ten years later. The sonority of this album leaf is determined by a special scordatura based on the natural tone scale on C.
