En 1874, après de nombreuses années passées dans les 'provinces, le professeur de Camille Saint-Saëns a pris le poste d'organiste à Paris, plus tard, non seulement il a travaillé comme musicien d'église, mais aussi en tant que professeur. Dans l'été de 1887 Fauré écrivit son opus Pavane. 50, initialement prévu pour un concert offrant un divertissement léger, qui ne tarda pas acquis une grande popularité comme un ensemble orchestral, avec et sans le choeur ajoutée par Fauré. Three decades later Serge Diaghilev had it choreographed for his Ballets russes ? a sign of its great popularity. ?Pavane? exudes the spirit of Paris?s fêtes galantes at the turn of the century. A version for solo piano appeared in 1889; it was most likely prepared by Fauré himself, who performed it several times and even recorded it for player piano.
