Georg Friedrich Händel: 10 Sonatas Volume 2: Flute: Instrumental Album

Georg Friedrich Handel's Sonatas for Violin and Basso Continuo belong to the core repertoire of Baroque Violin music some of them even being among the most famous repertoire pieces of their time. The new edition in the Wiener Urtext Edition series is based on Handel's autographs contemporary copies and first prints. In addition to Handel's nine violin sonatas it contains two minuets for Violin and Basso Continuo which have been handed down in the environment of the sonatas. Apart from the solo Violin part and a Continuo score with a realised easily playable Basso Continuo the edition also includes a figured Bass partwhich gives experienced Continuo players the opportunity to improvise on the Basso Continuo part. The notes on interpretation by the renowned Baroque expert Reinhard Goebel provide insight into a sonata performance that was common practice at the time of Handel.

G.F. Handel (1685-1759) is considered as one of the greatest composers to have ever lived. His Violin Sonatas remain prominent in the repertoire. French oboist Louis Bleuzet's transcription of two of the composer's Violin Sonatas for the Oboe make Handel's music even more accessible and popular. G.F. Handel was a German-born baroque composer who spent the majority of his life in England. His works remain ever popular to this day and Bleuzet's transcription of two Sonatas for Oboe and Piano ensure that the composer's much loved works are more versatile. Bleuzet's edits include breath marks articulation performance directions dynamics and phrasing. For all oboists this Bleuzet arrangement of two of Handel's Sonatas is essential.

Handel’s sonatas for one solo instrument and basso continuo are some of the finest examples found in the genre. The three oboe sonatas found in Barenreiter's edition are prime examples of this.The Urtext of the Halle Handel Complete Edition forms the basis for the new publication. As a scholarly critical edition it is concerned with the authentic sonatas written by Handel and not those often found in other collections which are either transcriptions of works originally composed for other instruments (e. g. the F major sonata which is often found in G major) or spurious compositions. All editorial additions are clearly indicated and as such players have a solidbasis for rendering performances true to the composer's intentions. The publication includes an informative historical as well as performance practice introduction by the noted Handel scholar Terence Best. for Violin and Basso continuo-Handel returned repeatedly throughout his life to the composition of works for violin and basso continuo. The earliest autograph HWV 358 was composed around 1707 his last work for this combination of instruments the Sonata in D major HWV 371 stems from circa 1750. In addition to the 5 sonatas which have survived as autographs there are 4 other sonatas of a spurious nature which have found a place in the violin repertoire under Handel’s name although they are certainly not from his pen. These sonatas are attempts by other unknown composers to make a name by using the style of the great master. To round off thisfirst ever publication of Handel's Complete Works for Violin and Basso continuo there are two movements currently not available in any other performing edition: the Allegro HWV 408 and an Andante HWV 412. This edition of Handel's Complete Flute Sonatas collects together the two sonatas which Handel intended for the Flute as well as another three from the Opus One group. This edition has been edited by David Lasocki with the Basso Continuo realisation by Peter Holman.
