Franz Schubert’s popular German Mass of 1827 follows in the footsteps of Michael Haydn’s work Deutsches Hochamt by turning to a German translation of the Ordinary mass. Its homophonic texture and largely syllabic setting of the words make it more accessible to lay choruses than Schubert’s masses in Latin an advantage reinforced by its diatonic melodic writing and constantly slow tempos.The present edition reproduces the Urtext from the New Schubert Edition and presents the definitive second version for chorus and wind instruments. Heribert Breuer has judiciously transferred the tenor and bass solos to the high voices and incorporated the original soprano and alto parts largely unchanged into the solo and chorus parts. Franz Schubert (1797-1828) great Austrian composer was a supreme melodist and master of lieder. This transcription is based on his Sanctus (Holy Holy Holy) from his German Mass in F. (ca. 1815) for four-part choir and lends itself well to the expressive qualities of the modern brass quintet.

In his role as Kapellmeister to the Dresden court Heinrich Schütz composed 'Zwölf Geistliche Gesänge' for the Saxon court church. Six of them belong to the liturgy of the 'German Mass'. They can be sung individually as well as in their entirety today as well as then even by 'small cantors' - as Schütz wanted it to be 'to the honour of God'.This selection of 12 motets for four-part mixed chorus (SATB) opens up these works to the field of practical music making.
