This elegant arrangement of the “Gloria†from John Lee’s Congregational Mass by James Biery contains two settings of the simple repeated melody in a falsobordone style. In the first setting, unison verses alternate with harmonized verses. Cantor, choir, and congregation may sing this setting unaccompanied or organ can be added to support the choral harmonization. The alternate setting is designed for congregations that know this piece well. Unison verses featuring a contrasting organ harmonization are sung in response to each falsobordone choral verse. This classic through-composed Gloria is an essential addition to a well-rounded choral library.  Optional 2 octaves Handbells.

Michael Joncas’s collection, Deep and Lasting Peace, is as rich as it is varied. Here you’ll find festive settings of great hymns scored for congregations, choir, brass, and organ incorporating Joncas’s original texts. Simple settings of the three gospel canticles found in Luke utilize a “psalm tune†while another setting of the Magnificat is ideal for festive occasions. Responding to frequent requests, Joncas has revised the Gloria from his Psallite Mass casting it in a “festive†setting using a refrain format augmented by brass as well as in a “ferial†setting for everyday Sunday use with two woodwinds and guitar. Not to be missed is the title track “Deep and Lasting Peace,†which is sure to enter mainstream congregational Communion repertoire. Composed in 2011 for Katherine Dienes-Williams and the choir of Guildford Cathedral, Guildford Mass comprises the ordinary of the mass (Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, Benedictus and Agnus Dei) in English (Common Worship). The music in each movement takes its lead from the words, incorporating the composer's characteristic rich harmonies, particularly in the slower movements, cleverly without the use of divisi. The upbeat and rhythmical sections in the Gloria offer contrast as does the chanted style of the Benedictus. A highly approachable setting of the communion texts which will bring fresh content to the liturgy for the enjoyment of choir and congregation alike.
