Pour Piano - Collection Archives Eric Satie-Seven timeless and enigmatic pieces for Piano solo by forward thinking and avant garde French composer Erik Satie. There is a definite distant Romantic quality running through these Six Gnossiennes with the score interspersed with unusual and often surreal instructions for the performer. They are among the best known of all of the composer???s works despite his intention that it should be wallpaper music - not to be heard but overheard by an audience.

Probablement stimulé par l?Exposition universelle de 1889 à Paris, Satie introduisit dans ces pièces des ornements orientaux.

Très sensible aux tendances musicales en vogue à l?époque, il relia entre eux des éléments exotiques, des influences provenant de la musique de cabaret, ainsi que, bien entendu, ses propres idées et en tira quelque chose d?absolument nouveau.

Composées entre 1890, pour les première et troisième, et 1893, pour la deuxième, les trois Gnossiennes, parues du vivant du compositeur, sont presque aussi célèbres que leurs soeurs aînées les Gymnopédies.

Du mot « gnossienne » on a proposé toutes sortes d?interprétations, mais il s?identifie avant toute autre chose à sa musique, énigmatique, obsédante par ses répétitions, sa monotonie rythmique, ses mélismes orientaux, ses silences.

Dans chacune de ces trois pièces le rythme joue un rôle essentiel : la musique, débarrassée de la barre de mesure, se déploie sur une basse syncopée lui assurant une grande unité.

La grande nouveauté des Gnossiennes réside dans la présence, pour la première fois, d?annotations fantaisistes destinées à l?interprète. Ce ne sont pour la plupart que des directives musicales : « postulez en vous-même », « enfouissez le son », « dans une grande bonté », suggèrent un état d?âme, une sonorité ou une allure. Satie was a French composer known for his personal eccentricities his unusual harmonic progressions and the cool simplicty of his melodies. his music had an influence on Debussy Ravel and John Cage among others. In 1888 Satie composed his three Gymnopedies followed two years later by the Gnossiennes. Simple delicate and gentle these six pieces contain a charm that is hauntingly beautiful enabling new discoveries to be made with each playing.
