This collection of etudes duets and exercises was written compiled and edited by Russian oboist and pedagogue Yuri Maizels to provide the most efficient means possible for young players to learn the basics of oboe playing. The composers Hinke (a German composer who taught and worked in St. Petersburg during the reign of the Tsars) Wiedemann Garnier and Debondue are among the finest of writers and pedagogues featured in this series. These studies begin very simply and gradually increase in difficulty becoming more challenging melodically and rhythmically with increasing comprehension of the instrument. Short phrases enable the student to learn to control both breathingand intonation. This collection of studies in three volumes can help a high school student or young professional to master technique breathing and intonation while developing the endurance that is vitally important for oboe players. Yuri Maizels was born in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) in the former Soviet Union. After the conclusion of the Second World War he was accepted at age 13 into the Naval Boarding Musical School in Leningrad (the school which had been organized in 1873 by Rimsky-Korsakov) to study the oboe. In 1964 he graduated from the College of Music with multiple degrees in oboe performance oboe teaching and conducting. During his career Yuri Maizels played in major orchestras working with such well-known conductors such as Yuri Temirkanov Mariss Jansons Yuri Simionov Valery Gergiev and others.

Croantion Anthem No.1-Zadok The Priest is a Coronation Anthem for King George II and has subsequently been heard at every coronation of the British Crown during the sovereign’s anointing. The opening choral entry of Zadok The Priest is one of the most striking moments in the choral repertory and typical of Handel’s grand rousing works. Scored for SSAATBB and Piano or Organ accompaniment and delightfully edited for this edition by Donald Burrows. Note: where possible the full division of the voices throughout the work should be observed to provide continual smooth transtitions.

A strong Second Advent offering this choral piece in minor drives forward with drama and fire. Crisp articulated staccatos mingle with a sharply punctuated piano part and the result is compelling. Per Nørgård I CHING Programme Note I CHING (1982) for Percussion Solo I. Thunder Repeated: The Image of Shock (hexagram no. 51) II. The Taming Power of the Small - 9 sounds (hexagram no. 9) III. The Gentle the Penetrating (hexagram no. 57) IV. Towards Completion: Fire over Water (hexagram no. 64) I Ching (The Book of Changes) four movements for solo percussion was written in 1982 and dedicated to the Danish percussionist Gert Mortensen. I Ching is the thousand-year-old Chinese oracle book whose 64 combinations of six 'Yang' or 'Yin' lines (bright or dark) represent 64 different states of being for all living things includinghuman beings. The 64 states of being should be thought of as an eternal hidden cycle which lies behind everything that we do: for example the supreme the enthusiastic initiative (combination or 'hexagram' no. 1 the creative) or the despair of the moment the warm and friendly and so on. The states of being exist on all levels - the official the private etc. - at the same time in many speeds. From these I selected four the sequence of which progresses from a situation from which there is apparently no solution to a (temporary) relief. In the first movement ´Thunder repeated the Image of Shock´ a vicious circle of claustrophobic closed circuits is represented by the tom-tom part. This is followed by tam-tams and wood sounds but returns full-circle to the tom-toms. The second movement ´The taming Power of the small´has its origins in the violence of the first movement but this time lets it resolve in a long glide upwards which stars with voice sounds ´borrowed´from the Beatles´´Revolution no 9´which are then transmitted to the other instruments. The third movement is ´The Gentle The Penetrating´in which lyrical poetry dominates with gentle bell-like sounds and delicate tunes. Mance Lipscomb was a sage a songster a responsible elder a self-made man... He played so many types of music in his own style with powerful conviction... Tilting his head back closing his eyes and thumping that Harmony Sovereign Mance brought the past to the present and turned the present into story into song and into life. -Taj Mahal Mance Lipscomb (1895-1976) the son of a former slave lived almost his whole life in Navasota Texas supporting himself and his family by tenant farming. But he was also a guitar player and songster who played blues and rags for his local neighbors at loal Saturday night parties. In 1960 Mancewas discovered by Chris Strachwith of Arhoolie Records and Mack McCormick. Within a short period of time Mance was recording albums and performing at festivals concert halls and clubs around the country. This video presents a rare television concert recorded in Texas for KLRU TV in 1969. It shows the panorama and genius of Mance's music.
