This is the second of six Masses composed by Franz Schubert (1797-1828), also referred to frequently as the Mass in G, and it remains the best known of the three shorter settings titled Mass. Composed in 1815, it was originally scored for choir, string orchestra, organ, and the soloists and remained one of the composer's less-noted works, not even being printed until 1845. But the Mass's later popularity also led Franz' brother Ferdinand to add winds and timpani after Franz' death. And a 1980s discovery of a set of parts that include trumpets and brass, in addition to some minor changes, suggests that Schubert intended something grander than the original scoring. The current edition may be played with the original strings and organ only or with the addition of the oboe/clarinets, bassoons, trumpets, and timpani. Apart from some passages for the soprano, this Mass has only modest solo passages, and it is written in a devotional mood. Although the musical archives of the world have yielded up their fair share of 'lost' or forgotten early works by the great composers, few might be regarded with more surprise and excitement than A Cambridge Mass by Ralph Vaughan Williams. It was completed in 1899 shortly before his 27th birthday and was successfully submitted for the Cambridge degree of Doctor of Music, but remained unperformed and unpublished till now. The work that has emerged from more than a century of obscurity is indeed a remarkable achievement, lasting 45 minutes and written for full orchestra, double chorus and SATB soloists. A setting of the Credo, Sanctus, Hosanna and Benedictus of the Mass, with an orchestral Offertorium as its second movement, this richly prescient musical outpouring shows the young composer's mastery of complex counterpoint no less than of bold melodic writing and striking orchestral gestures. By far the largest of VW's works predating A Sea Symphony of 1909, A Cambridge Mass already exhibits a command of large choral forces, inspired in part by the example of Verdi's Requiem, which the composer had recently encountered, and which influenced him profoundly. While there are also echoes of Bach, the Viennese classical masters and of Brahms and Dvorak, the current and pulse of the music, and the grand conception, are unmistakably those of Vaughan Williams himself. The movements of the mass ordinary as we know it have now been composed in various pop styles that have their origin in the gospel music. We hear, then, not only the classic American gospel style (including thecharacteristic clapping and swing rhythms), but also freer gospel styles that have developed over the course of time. The Credo, for example, is a ballad with rock and funk influences. The Agnus Dei is heard as a slow blues—a genreclosely linked to gospel music. The unique feature of this work, of course, is in the combination of all these pop and gospel elements with the Latin liturgy of the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, Benedictus and Agnus Dei, which results in abeautiful, cohesive whole. New edition of this 1999-2000 dialogue between the two orchestral families of woodwind and brass, each with their respective material. Their initial characters, equating to the poetic stereotypes of 'masculine' and 'feminine', become progressively blurred and androgynised during the course of the work as larger sound masses give way to chamber music-style sub-groupings and individual instrumental solos. The wind-only scoring of the work posed various compositional challenges. The composer has stated that 'if no-one is playing, nothing is heard', so the illusion of sustained sound has to be created without the support of a string section. Similarly, clear attack and accentuation have to be carefully sculpted, as there is no percussion to help articulation. In the wordsof the London Times, “Lindberg, a master of orchestral sound, has chosen virtually the same forces as Stravinsky in his Symphonies of Wind Instruments, and with its five connected movements Gran Duo is a symphony in the modern sense...a darkly brooding yet peaceful work that reflects something of a unique landscape.&rdquo.
