WINNER OF BASCA S 2012 BRITISH COMPOSER AWARD FOR WIND OR BRASS BAND.A Symphony of Colours was commissioned by the Fairey Band with assistance from the John Golland Trust. The first performance was given on 2 May 2011 during the European Brass Band Championships Montreux Switzerland by The Fairey Band conducted by Russell Gray. The same band gave the UK première on 29 January 2012 at the Royal Northern College of Music Festival of Brass Manchester. The title of this substantial work relates to the rare condition of Synesthesia where sufferers see colours or smell scent in response to hearing music. One of the most famous musicians who had thiscondition was Olivier Messiaen to whom this dramatic piece is a homage. Dobson s music incorporates sideways glances towards Messiaen s great organ work L Ascension. The Symphony s four movements which merge seamlessly into a single span are Joy Chroma (which is a journey through Dobson s own perception of Synesthesia) Endless Time (where tuned percussion features alongside extended solos for the euphonium) and the final climactic Ascent.Dobson s A Symphony of Colours which was conceived as a virtuoso work for elite brass bands.

'A Man's Destiny'-‘Yn Ieren en Sinen’ (‘with much conviction’) was commissioned by CMV Harmonie Sneek (Friesland The Netherlands) to mark their 95th anniversary. As requested by the commissioning party the composer based this work on the life of a former member of the band who played flugelhorn until the age of 86. Music was very important in the eventful life of the man in question. A passionate musician he had a great love for chorale melodies and his favourite piece the famous Canon by the English composer Thomas Tallis (1505-1585) was the source of inspiration for this composition.

(Born for You) Suite Sinfónica-So Nata Per Te — or Naci para ti in Spanish — translates as ?I was born for you?. This symphonic suite is inspired by Pepe Domingo a great music enthusiast and lover of life who wanted to commemorate his long and happy marriage to his dear wife Concha. He commissioned Ferrar Ferran to set to music the great bond of their partnership: the couple will be able to close their eyes and relive through the music their most precious memories one by one.So Nata Per Te is a suite of many contrasts. Its contemporary modern flavours are entertaining while the colourful variations are exciting and fascinating. Audience members may recall happy memories in their ownlives listening to the delightful famous tunes that appear throughout the work and although somewhat different from the originals they are easily recognisable.Ferrer Ferran dedicated this work to Pepe Domingo and his wife Concha not only for their great enthusiasm and passion for music but also for their mutual love. So Nata Per Te was premiered on 27 February 2010 at the Auditorio Florida of Paiporta (Spain) by the Banda Primitiva de Paiporta conducted by the composer.

Hot Shot March and 1 2 Cha Cha Cha-Reinforcement of sight-rhythms is critical to the development of good music reading. The young band education team of Amy Adam and Mike Hannickel has developed the Skill Builder series of compositions with sight-rhythm repetition in mind. Hot Shot March focuses on paired semi-quavers on the second beat of the 4/4 measure to the exclusion of other semi-tone patterns giving your young musicians much exposure to this important sight-rhythm. 1 2 Cha Cha Cha does the same thing for paired semi-tones on beat 3. With two great easy band arrangements lots of sightrhythm reinforcement and specialised warm-up exercises included in the package it’s a great buy as well as a greatteaching tool.
