As Ernie Hawkins attempted to do with some Louis Armstrong songs in an earlier DVD set (Louis and Bix it is said had opportunities toplay together and greatly admired each other) here he is playing and teaching some favorite Bix songs on guitar. These songs may be challenging but they are fun and rewarding to learn and play. Hopefully learning this style via these songs will open the student to new possibilities.This lesson is over 2 hours. The arrangements are for the intermediate to advance players. They are multi-section compositions with lots of fingerpicking challenges. But all your hard work will be very worthwhile as these tunes are some of the greatest in the early jazz repertoire. Rev. Gary Davis was a musical giant. His ideas spanned a wide range of techniques and styles. His repertoire featured blues, rags, show instrumentals and gospel songs. LESSON TWO: The key of C was a favorite for Rev. Davis. In this lesson we explore the party tune Sally Where'd You Get Your Liquor From (made popular by Hot Tuna). Rev. Davis used to joke that he could play Candyman so many different ways that he would be able to play it nonstop for at least 8 hours without repeating himself! We look at two versions of this very popular folk blues with the regular Candyman followed by the Two-Step Candyman. LESSON THREE: 'Raggin' the blues' was a great part of Rev. Davis's repertoire. His Walkin' Dog Blues is a tour de force in a blues in C. All fourteen verses are transcribed here, and we study how this arrangement develops. Buck Rag is a fascinating rag played in the key of C. It is ideal for the alternating bass technique i.e. Mississippi John Hurt's style of playing. In this lesson we start by learning an arrangement of Marshall Owens' 1930s recording of Try Me One More Time. This was originally played in an Open G tuning but is here arranged in standard tuning using a JohnHurt approach. Not all blues from the 1920s and 1930s were fingerpicked.
