Heine Songs

Par FORTNER WOLFGANG. In his later years Fortner wrote a number of compositions for specific, usually private, occasions, most to texts by major German poets. These songs from his estate are here published as a collection for the first time. The dedications are very personal and intimate, in keeping with the private realm of the compositions. The transparent, delicate piano writing, reminiscent of some of Webern’s setting, is indicative of Fortner’s commanding mature style - economical yet relaxed and mellow./ Répertoire / Chant et Piano

After a long time spent writing only for piano Schumann produced a true outburst of lieder inspired by the poetry of Heinrich Heine: ?What a blessing it is to write for the voice!? Schumann wrote to his beloved Clara. It is as though a knot was untied while he was writing the Heine-Liederkreis Op.24. Retrospectively Schumann wrote that this new poetic spirit had inspired the composition of lieder to such an extent that it had become the only genre to make significant progress since the time of Beethoven.Indeed these nine songs which represent the only complete setting of the underlying Heine cycle came so close to the spirit of the poet that a new epoch of liedcomposition was founded. Songs of Solitude and Night (Recorder Part). Solo recorder part. ?Songs of Solitude and Night? is in two movements. The first movement has text from Völuspá from the Old Edda, and is called ?Prelude?. The text is about creation of the earth, the stars, the sun, the moon and the first people on earth, Ask and Embla. The second movement is a poem by the faroese author William Heinesen translated into english by the faroese author Gunnar Hoydal and is called ?Hogboy?. The poem begins like this: ?Hogboy, the spectre with the cheery name, lives in the mound Maeís Hove in the Orkney island of Pomona. Here you can hear him singing bewildered songs in the dark. Playful Pomona girls are dancing in the moonlight around the old grave"
