Delicate and fragile, this musical parable from scripture reminds us to trust God in every situation. The musical style suggests a folk ballad, using unison singing for lyrical clarity and simple four-part writing to add a deeper expressive element. The guitar-like piano support gives the anthem a pleasant, unpretentious ambience.

This rebooted triptych of short operas is family friendly and full of fun, while paying tribute to the African tradition of storytelling for all ages. Sister Sparrow, Sister Robin and Madame Partridge retell the antics of Bre'r Rabbit and his nemesis Bre'r Fox in Briar Patch, The Pot of Sense, and Madame Partridge and her Eggs. Okoye's music blends African American musical styles of jazz, blues, and gospel with contemporary concert music sounds. Combined with Moore's libretto, the result brings to mind a meeting Langston Hughes and Gilbert and Sullivan on steroids, en route to the Black church. A concert version of Briar Patch will be available for full orchestra with five soloists. Libretto by Carman Moore. The music blends African American musical styles of jazz, blues, and gospel with contemporary concert music sounds. Intended for all audiences. NOTE: Each story from the Tales from the Briar Patch is derived from African folk tales. The character Bre'r Rabbit is actually the trickster, Anansi the Spider, of ancient Ghanaian folklore. While many people associate him and his friends with Joel Chandler Harris' Uncle Remus stories, the stories predate Harris and hist stories. The creators updated the language, using all animals to portray the story, with the trio of spirited birds narrating. Producers find that the works rate well with all audiences and are especially useful for community discussions and engagement. This rebooted triptych of short operas is family friendly and full of fun, while paying tribute to the African tradition of storytelling for all ages. This meditative piece based on Matthew 6:26 and John 14:1, 27 employs the tender hymn tune sparrow. Scored for horn in F and organ, both parts begin in a quiet, thoughtful manner before soaring to a majestic climax and then returning to the opening mood. A substitute part for clarinet in B♠is provided. If using clarinet, the dark, warm quality of the chalumeau register is perfect for the character of this piece. The setting for horn in F is recorded on Songs of Simple Faith by Sharon Moe at Marble Collegiate Church in New York. Clarinet in B-flat can be substituted for Horn in F.

MARS HILL FANTASIA was commissioned by and is gratefully dedicated to Mars Hill College (now Mars Hill University), as part of the festivities celebrating their Sesquicentennial in 2006. The work was commissioned by their Low Brass instructor, and my friend, Dr. James Sparrow. The university is located right in the heart of the beautiful mountain area of Western North Carolina, and I wrote a work which both celebrates the long and distinguished history of Mars Hill University and its lovely mountain setting. The work is scored for two combined ensembles -- an 8-part low brass ensemble of trombones, euphoniums, and tubas, and an 8-part percussion ensemble of both mallet and non-pitched percussion instruments. The music contains rich, sonorous, and joyful gestures, with stentorian fanfares, resonant chords, and lyrical melodies. It was given a truly exciting and festive premiere in October 2006 by the combined low brass and percussion ensembles of the music department of Mars Hill.MARS HILL FANTASIA was commissioned by and is gratefully dedicated to Mars Hill College (now Mars Hill University), as part of the festivities celebrating their Sesquicentennial in 2006.The work was commissioned by their Low Brass instructor, and my friend, Dr. James Sparrow. This cycle of ten piano miniatures by Jan Hanus is intended for the youngest pianists; an age group for which it is usually very difficult to find adequate recital pieces that would respect not only the mentality of a small child but also its technical level. The titles of the individual pieces (March of the Industrious Ants, Sparrows' Party, Bug is swinging, Musician Cricket and others) already give a good picture of the inventive, humorous and, to certain extent, programme compositions in which one can easily feel the atmosphere incorporated in their titles. Individual compositions are supplemented with lovely illustrations by Daniela Zichova which surely makes the experience of playing the pieces even more enjoyable.

This timely work with a heartfelt text by poet Kim Baker reflects on the effects of climate change and claims “love will save us” in the triumphant conclusion. The “hoo” of the owl is woven throughout as an accompaniment and response. Syncopations, a djembe part, and an occasional clap make this an engaging work for choirs and audiences to enjoy.
