Chosen as the 2009 recipient of the George Washington Medal of Honor awarded by the Freedoms Foundation of Valley Forge, this composition is the only musical setting of the inscription on the Tomb of the Unknot Soldier in Arlington Cemetery. Here Rests in Honored Glory exemplifies the essence of the National Awards by promoting an understanding and appreciation for our country's rich heritage and unique freedoms. Beginning in 2010, according to the Curator of the Normandy France Museum, a CD of the work is played each June 6th in honor of D-Day. On December 28, 2018, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed into law a bill making Here Rests in Honored Glory the Official New York State Hymn of Remembrance for all American Veterans.

In honor of the 200th anniversary of St. Rose Philippine Duschene’s arrival in New Orleans, Michael Joncas was commissioned to write a new mass setting by the Religious of the Sacred Heart. This edition is scored for SATB voices and features instrumental parts for complete symphony orchestra. Parts may be used according to the players available in your circumstance.  The mass includes optional phrases in French and Potawatomi honoring the American saint’s heritage and ministry. The mass may be sung in unison, reserving the choral and instrumental parts for holy days. While some contemporary musical settings of the “Glory to God” seem burdensome and even awkward, Joncas’s melody is absolutely delightful. The singable through-composed Gloria boasts a magnificent and manageable modulation that contributes to the triumphant nature of the piece. Honor Bound: to be obligated and required by one’s own code of conduct to do what is ethically right. This is often referenced in the military but applies equally to our everyday conduct and is how a free society can function. The march is intended to represent the dignity and worth of the individual.Honor Bound is a traditional style military march containing important opportunities for each section, including the percussion introduction and interlude, trumpet fanfare at m. 5, low brass melody in the second strain and woodwind lead at m. 66. The notated dynamics are essential for musical contrast. The tempo can vary depending on the skill of the students and the preference of the conductor. A field drum or multiple snare drums can be added to the percussion solos at the discretion of the director.
