Martin E. Marty, Emeritus Professor at the University of Chicago, says it best in the forward of this new hymn tune collection, “Teach Our Hearts is full of music that will indeed belong in cathedrals and inspire their choirs. But I am here called upon to witness to the fact that everything in this book is singable among smaller worshipping communities, where volunteer choirs help lead ordinary congregations-if there are such-in singing.†54 new hymns, songs and carols are presented here texts by a plethora of well-known writers. This hymn-anthem tells the astounding story of the God who is revered by all of creation- earth, sea, and sky- choosing Mary to be the mother of the Savior. The mixed meters employed for the 6th-century poetry are anything but jarring, and the middle stanza is set to different music with a medieval feel that accentuates the repetition of the word blest to describe Mary's destiny. A delightful but substantial anthem useful for Marian feasts as well as Christmastide. The keyboard part works well on both organ and piano. Congregational participation is welcome but not required; reprint material is included.

The juxtaposition of Christ’s joyful nativity and the dark prophesy of his future sacrifice in this thought-provoking Ruth Duck text pairs beautifully with the ebb and flow of the mixed meters and the tension and release of close and open harmonies. This exquisite yet accessible setting for Christmas will leave your congregation stunned to reverent silence.
