Elegy' is a homage to the influential 20thC English composer John W. Duarte (1919-2004). Elegy does not reflect the compositional style of Duarte, but rather is an acknowledgement of his editorial publication for Chester Music (1984) of 'Homenaje pour le Tombeau de Claude Debussy', composed by Manual de Falla (1920). Consequently, 'Elegy' adopts the compositional style of the Habanera.

I first met John W. Duarte in 1990, at the Wirral International Guitar Festival and it was on this occasion that he shared with me advice about composing for guitar. Subsequently, thereafter I met him several times at the same event and was always struck by his enthusiasm to generously share his knowledge about music. In 2020 I was honoured to be asked, by JWD's son, Chris Duarte, to edit some previously unpublished works written by his father - works that are now also published by Les Productions d'OZ.

Elegy has been recorded by the Argentinian guitarist Daniela Rossi on Brilliant Classics 97470 - John W. Duarte Guitar Music Vol.5, Homages.

« Elegy » est un hommage à l'influent compositeur anglais du XXe siècle, John W. Duarte (1919-2004). L'élégie ne reflète pas le style de composition de Duarte, mais plutôt une reconnaissance de sa publication éditoriale pour Chester Music (1984) de « Homenaje pour le Tombeau de Claude Debussy », composé par Manual de Falla (1920). Par conséquent, « Elegy » adopte le style de composition de la Habanera.

J'ai rencontré John W. Duarte pour la première fois en 1990, au Wirral International Guitar Festival et c'est à cette occasion qu'il m'a partagé des conseils sur la composition pour guitare. Par la suite, je l'ai rencontré à plusieurs reprises lors d'un même événement et j'ai toujours été frappé par son enthousiasme à partager généreusement ses connaissances en matière de musique. En 2020, j'ai eu l'honneur d'être invité par le fils de JWD, Chris Duarte, à éditer des œuvres inédites écrites par son père - œuvres qui sont désormais également publiées par Les Productions d'OZ.

A house, too, can be a battlefield, and a garden a wilderness. The house here belongs to Faber and Thea: middle-class, middle-aged, probably more than middle-income and in a mid-matrimonial rut of mutual laissez-faire. Also in the house is their young ward Flora, to whom Faber has been making sexual advances. And there are visitors. Thea's sister Denise is taking a break from other distant battlefields, where she is engaged in the struggle against oppression. A black writer, Mel, is here as well with his white lover Dov, a musician: the first homosexual couple to be 'out' on the operatic stage.These people's entanglementswith each other but also, and more importantly, within themselveshave to be addressed, as in Tippett's first opera. But this time the Mozart model is Cosi fan tutte, and the lessons of myth are clothed in the language of psychiatry, as practised by Mangus, the Don Alfonso who may not be as much in control as he would hope. In the last act he stages a performance of The Tempest, which comes adrift. Perhaps more has been achieved in the middle act, a swirl of short scenes ending in an exchange of songs between Flora and Dovan exchange, too, of homages to Schubert and the blues, both held in the magic of this lustrous score.(Paul Griffiths)

On January 1st, 2016, Stephane Vande Ginste had an extraordinary intention: he planned to compose a 1-minute piece for piano every single day for the whole year. The result is an impressive collection of piano miniatures which - although contemporary - result in a variety of musical styles: apart from some experimental pieces, there are jazzy- and poppy pieces, more traditional etudes, polyphonic compositions and so on... The 366 pieces also tell various stories: from very emotional events like the terrorist attacks in Brussels over homages in honor of deceased artists (David Bowie,...) to birthdays and festive occasions,... . More than once, even poetry (Heinrich Heine, Anna Enquist, ..) or other pieces of art inspired Stephane to compose his daily one-minute piece. Every single composition originated from the here and now, and therefore capture the unfiltered feelings and emotions of that very unique moment in time: joy, enthusiasm, but also melancholy and sadness.
