Annie's Gone Home, composed in the style of a spiritual, was written as a tribute to composer Bud Woodruff's mother. The tune is built on phrases of easily understandable material, but the poignant nature of the piece is marked with profundity. From the subtle bass solo to the emotional high points, the piece is inspired by this strong woman in the life of the composer.
Annies Gone Home is a tribute to my Mother, Annette Fenner Hains (19232017). Her siblings and cousins always called her Annie. She loved music, and her influence was the primary inspiration for me to go into music. Her tastes were wildly diverse, loving everything from symphonic music to Country/Western, to various styles of folk music, to pop, to marches, but she had a very tender spot for hymns and spirituals.
While it is easy to interpret grief in this music, and its presence is undeniable, it is really intended more as a song of the ultimate triumph of goodness. In her wisdom, she was able to capture deep thoughts within simple phrases, which I have also tried to capture. Her life was one of frequent struggles, yet she was inspiring to many. She emerged from every difficulty, never unscathed, but always victorious, with clear eyes and head held high, until her last battle, which brought about her greatest victory. This sentiment is what I tried to capture. If too slow a tempo is taken, that feeling is lost and a sense of grief takes over. That may be what a conductor wants to convey, but is not what I intended.

As part of a collaboration between students and composer, Sean O'Loughlin, Dark Dreams is a dark and mysterious piece that utilizes techniques such as tremolo and pizzicato. Following a slow and mysterious opening which illustrates the tapestry of sound for the composition, the work develops the musical material into various vivid, intense, and gripping musical moments.
Dark Dreams was commissioned by the Westport, Connecticut Public Schools for the Bedford Middle School 7th Grade Orchestra, Michele Anderson, director. It is a piece influenced by many ideas from the students including such descriptive words as dark, mysterious, vivid, intense and gripping. The collaboration process on commissions like this are very rewarding for both the students and composer.
The students were looking to include techniques like tremolo and pizzicato, so the opening includes both of these to set the tapestry of sound for the composition. The slow and mysterious opening gives way to an intense fast section at m. 19. Trading off between upper and lower strings adds to the tension before the upper strings take hold of the melody at m. 31. This melody is derived from the slow opening material. The lower strings get their chance on the melody at m. 47 in an augmented form. This builds to a dramatic slow section at m. 57. The opening material returns at m. 66 to transition back to the fast material. Make sure to play the silence at m. 88 for maximum effect and really lean into the final note even though it is on beat 3 of the measure.

Premiered in New York City, February 2009.Commissioned by Music From China ensemble and PRISM Saxophone Quartet, with a commissioning grant provided by the New York State Council on the Arts in 2008.The imagination of this music came from the figures in the murals carved in the Mogao Caves in the ancient city Dunhuang more than a thousand years ago. The name Dunhuang originally meant “prospering, flourishing.â€Â Lying at the western end of the Gansu Corridor in China, Dunhuang was very important in the Silk Road that carried new thoughts, ideas, arts and sciences to the East and West in the ancient time. The Mogao Grottoes were built and developed over 11 dynasties over more than 1,000 years (from the 4th to 14th centuries), with murals, sculptures, wooden cave buildings and books. It was really the heyday of the art of Dunhuang in the brilliant Tang Dynasty (618-907).  The murals depict rolling dance gestures, the flapping streamer lines, the flying melodies around the clouds, and the fiery rhythms in the sky! They show the high spirit and the strong power of the people and their society. All these impressions are translated into the textures of the two Chinese traditional instrumental parts with support from a set of percussion instruments, and the sound of a saxophone quartet. It’s mysterious, vivid, colorful and energetic, it brings us to dream of the ancient glory and yearn for the future...—Chen Yi.
