In each of the four movements of this major work for concert band, the composer has tried to capture in music something of the spirit of this beautiful Swiss town of Rheinfelden, which lies on the banks of the Rhein. The opening movement, Promenade, sees woodwind and brass alternating short melodic fragments leading to a noble melody from the horns. The dreamy Ballad features a saxophone solo and chorale-like melody. With this work, commissioned by a prestigious girls? school with morethan a hundred years of tradition and history, the composer aimed towrite a universal work with love as its theme. He succeeded in doingthis with Sinfonia - a delightfully charming interlude with a transparentsound and a striking melody. In 2005 maakte de Japanse Hamamatsu Municipal Senior High School een nieuwe start als middelbare school voor zowel meisjes als jongens. Voor die gelegenheid schreef Satoshi Yagisawa op verzoek een nieuw schoollied. In januari 2006componeerde hij Sinfonia voor het schoolharmonieorkest, geleid door Atsuo Yamagata. Het werd een universeel werk met liefde als thema, een soort interludium met een transparante klank en een treffende melodie.Mit diesem Werk, das er zur Umwandlung einer traditionsreichen Madchenschule zu einer gemischten Schule schrieb, wollte der japanische Komponist ein universelles Werk uber das Miteinander und die Liebe schaffen. Dies gelang ihm mit Sinfonia, einem interessanten Zwischenspiel von transparentem Klang mit einer eindruckvollen Melodie. Le Lycee Municipal d'Hamamatsu au Japon fut un prestigieux lycee de filles s'appuyant sur plus de cent ans d'histoire et de traditions. En 2005, l'etablissement prit un nouvel envol en devenant un lycee mixte. Pour celebrer cet evenement, Satoshi Yagisawa fut charge de composer un nouveau chant emblematique de l'ecole.En janvier 2006, il compose Sinfonia, une œuvre de commande pour l'Orchestre d'Harmonie du Lycee (Atsuo Yamagata, dir.). Wilhelm Stenhammar (1871-1927) was a Swedish pianist, conductor and composer. His compositions include incidental music, operas, concerts, two symphonies and choral works. Initially influenced above all by Wagner and Bruckner, Stenhammar increasingly welcomed in his music a Nordic colour as well as melodic and rhythmic characters typical of Swedish folklore. Completed in 1921, the cantata SÃ¥ngen (The Song) was Stenhammar's last major work, and its combination of harmonic richness and contrapuntal dexterity ensured it awarm reception. The Interlude connecting the two halves of the work is the only part frequently performed today. It begins by creating a serious andintimate atmosphere, then the music gradually unfolds in increasingly powerful sonorities. Towards the middle a noble brass chorale emerges, but neither this nor the following finely crafted climax manage to change the prevailing mood of subtle melancholy typical of late Romantic Scandinavian composers. This arrangement by Franco Cesarini will allow your audience to get to know this great composer unknown to most.

To this melody he sets the Latin text from the last part of the Gloria. The chorale is then heard after an interlude and can, at the director’s discretion, be accompanied by the choir singing in either German or English. The tune Old Hundredth is one of the best-known melodies in all Christian musical traditions and first appeared in the 1551 psalter Pseaumes Octante Trois de David, where it is used as a setting for a version of Psalm 134; it is usually attributed to the French composer Louis Bourgeois (c.1510 - c.1560). The melody was then used in 1561 by the Scots clergyman, William Kethe in Sternhold and Hopkins’ Psalter for his paraphrase of Psalm 100 - All People that on Earth do Dwell<(I>, which is still the most familiar hymn sung to this noble tune. When Tate and Brady’s New Version of the Psalms was published in 1696, the melody became know as the ‘old’ version - henceits current title. This arrangement presents three contrasting verses and is effective as a concert piece as well as an instrumental interlude as part of a church service or wedding. “Slane,” an Irish folk song that appears towards the end of Prelude on an Irish Folk Tune, is a hymn tune version of the much older folk melody “The Banks of the Bann.” In this composition, fragments of this melody are introduced, hinting at what is to come later in the piece, but another folk-like tune is predominant. This theme later acts as a descant to “Slane” when it finally appears. Add a little Sparke sparkle to any concert with this lovely interlude. Duration: 4:00.

Ferenc Erkel (1810-1893) was a composer, pianist, conductor and teacher, a leading figure in 19th century Hungarian music, creator of Hungarian national opera. In his operas based on Hungarian history (Bátori Mária: 1840, Hunyadi László: 1844, Bánk bán: 1861, Dózsa György: 1867, etc.), blending elements of the style of Bellini, Meyerbeer and Verdi with verbunkos he created a distinctively Hungarian opera genre.
