A Midwest Celebration is geschreven voor de Decatur Municipal Band uit Illinois in de Verenigde Staten, ter gelegenheid van het 150-jarig bestaan van dit orkest. Fondé le 19 septembre 1857, l’Orchestre d’Harmonie Municipal de Decatur (Illinois, États-Unis) est une des plus anciennes formations civiles américaines. Depuis sa création, l’orchestre n’a jamais cessé de participer activement la vie florissante de la cité, se produisant lors de concerts en intérieur ou en plein air, de parades ou de certains événements spéciaux. la demande de Jim Culbertson, directeur musical de l’orchestre, Philip Sparke fut chargé d’écrire une pièce qui illustre la longue et riche histoire de la formation travers un répertoire varié qui s’étend de l’universclassique avec ses ouvertures et marches jusqu’aux œuvres originales et arrangements d’œuvres récents.A Midwest Celebration s’inspire de quelques célèbres ouvertures orchestrales du XIXe siècle écrites par de grands compositeurs tels que Berlioz, Verdi et Suppé. L’introduction est florissante. Tout s’apaise lorsqu’apparaît une mélodie aux courbes harmonieuses, jouée par les cors, les clarinettes et les saxophones. Mais peine commence-t-il se développer que le thème est brutalement interrompu par l’intervention des trompettes qui ouvrent un vertigineux passage Vivace, illuminé par des fanfares brillantes (cuivres) et une profusion d’éléments d’ornementation (bois). Les cors reprennent l’exposition de la mélodie initiale soutenus par la douceur ondulante des fl tes. Soudain, les lignes mélodiques du Vivace resurgissent et balayent la musique pour progresser vers leur intensité maximale, point de rencontre entre les deux thématiques qui mènent le composition vers sa conclusion.

Het werk opent met een feestelijke inleiding die wordt gevolgd door een snel en ritmisch gedeelte in 4/4 maat, die echter grotendeels als een driedelige 8/8 maat klinkt. Een cadens luidt een contrasterend langzaam deel in, dat viaeen lang crescendo uitkomt op een herhaling van het ritmische begindeel. De afsluiting van deze ouverture wordt gevormd door de Procession to a New Age In deze processie naar een nieuw tijdperk duikt een compleet nieuw themaop. Daarnaast wordt gebruik gemaakt van thematisch materiaal uit de inleiding. Ook verschijnt hier nogmaals het hoofdthema uit het snelle deel als tegenstem van het zogenaamde processiethema.

Ein neues Zeitalter bricht an - eröffnet von festlichen Blechbläserfanfaren. Was wird die Zukunft bringen? In seinem Werk Overture to a New Age drückt Jan de Haan einerseits Vorfreude, andererseits aber auch das Bewusstsein, dass nicht alles so rosig ist, wie es manchmal scheint, aus. Letztendlich setzen sich jedoch Zuversicht und Hoffnung durch, von Jan de Haan in einer strahlenden Coda widergegeben. Das neue Zeitalter kann beginnen!

Overture to a New Age (“Ouverture d’une nouvelle ère”) débute avec une introduction solennelle suivie d’un canevas vif et rythmé. L’intervention de la clarinette solo marque le début d’un passage expressif et riche en contrastes. Un long crescendo précède le retour du motif initial. L’œuvre se termine sur une trame processionnelle dont la ligne mélodique annonce l’ouverture d’une ère nouvelle. Le thème du passage vif est alors réexposé et chemine en superposition celui de la trame processionnelle. La coda grandiose illumine cette brillante ouverture.

Marchissimo will make a fantastic opening piece for any concert. It does however come with a twist! It can be played simply as written, but is really designed to be ‘staged’ with players coming on the concert platform one by one as they begin to play. The piece actually consists of three marches in one, each of which highlights a section of the band. The piece culminates in a final climax where all three march themes are played simultaneously.

Marchissimo is een fantastisch openingsstuk voor elk concert, maar er zit wel een bijzondere wending aan! Het kan gewoon worden gespeeld zoals genoteerd, maar het is eigenlijk zo gecomponeerd dat muzikanten een voor een het podiumop kunnen komen voor ze beginnen te spelen. Het gaat hier in feite om drie marsen in één, waarbij steeds een deel van het orkest aan bod komt. Het stuk leidt naar een climax waarin alledrie de thema’s tegelijkertijd worden gespeld.

Marchissimo wurde als Eröffnung eines Konzerts geschrieben, da es einem Spieler nach dem Anderen Gelegenheit gibt, auf die Bühne zu treten. Im ersten Satz treten erst die Schlaginstrumente, zusammen mit Pikkoloflöte, Bassklarinette, Euphonium und Tuba auf. Im zweiten Satz kommen Posaune, Flöte, Klarinette und schließlich Saxophon hinzu. Im dritten Satz komplettieren die Hörner das Blasorchester, welches im fulminanten Schluss die Themen aller drei Sätze noch einmal aufnimmt. Mit Marchissimo ist ein wirkungsvoller Auftritt garantiert!

Marchissimo est un condensé de trois marches qui offre deux possibilités d’interprétation. Elle peut être jouée telle qu’elle est écrite, ou se développer selon un jeu scénique bien structuré où les musiciens entrent en scène au moment de leur première intervention dans la pièce. Chaque groupe expose alors un des trois thèmes principaux. Lorsque la formation est au complet, un court passage constitué de fragments des trois lignes mélodiques surgit travers l’ensemble de la formation avant d’aborder le tutti final, ultime retour des trois thèmes exposés simultanément.

My dedication to the string instruments has been a constant throughout my compositional career and I knew that sooner or later the time would come to compose a concerto for violin and orchestra. That moment came in the autumn of 2002 and after ten months of uninterrupted work I finished it in August of 2003. It is a work structured similarly to the traditional concertos. An important impetus for the elaboration of my concerto was due to the ill-fated violinist Ginette Neveu. Her version of Sibelius' Concerto has always stayed with me. For this reason the first movement, Moderato-Allegro, begins with a contemplative atmosphere similar to that of Sibelius' Concerto in which the principal thematic ideas appear tentatively. These ideas, two rhythmic and two melodic, are reaffirmed through a broad development that culminates in an orchestral fullness. A calm, mysterious passage recalls the introduction and after becoming blurred, three bars burst in leading to the rapid section of the movement. Soloist and orchestra engage in a dialectic struggle of a dramatic nature. The agitation subsides leaving only a tranquil and suggestive clarinet phrase. This will be taken up by the soloist who leads up to the movement's most dramatic moment playing an accelerating triplet figure supported by an orchestral pedal in crescendo. From here the soloist's cadenza emerges beginning with soft double notes. It finishes with an ascending progression and the soloist settles into the high register to elicit the orchestra's intervention in a soft and transfigured atmosphere. Once internalised the second movement, Adagio poco sostenuto e leggero begins. It has a solemn character and opens with two trumpet calls answered by the violoncellos and the contrabasses. The violin soloist introduces and plays two nostalgic themes, the first in the low register and the second, more extensive, in the middle register. The soft and delicate Misterioso e leggero begins with the violin singing on high. The rhythm of the constant quaver figures gradually accelerates until the soloist provokes a dramatic full orchestra as in a cadenza. Once again, the Calmo, in which the soloist with less and less orchestral attire serenely bids farewell. A rising series of double stops by the soloist serves to initiate the Finale-Scherzo. In 6/8 rhythm and with the character of a rondo it carries us along in a carefree, virtuosic ambiance. The principal motives, brief and concise, emerge from the happy, playful theme presented by the soloist. With an intricate progression of rapid sixths in double stops it reaches a tense and somewhat combative moment. However this resolves itself in a diminuendo that the soloist peacefully takes up with the notes re-la to commence the cadenza. This culminates in a series of tied notes to reintroduce the principal theme. A moment of melodic suspension serves as a farewell before the brief and jovial final coda. --The author

A lo largo de mi carrera compositiva mi dedicacion a los instrumentos de cuerda ha sido constante y sabia que, tarde o temprano, llegaria el momento de componer un concierto para violin y orquesta. Este llego en otono de 2002 y, tras diez meses de trabajo ininterrumpido, lo termine en agosto de 2003. Se trata de una obra estructurada de manera similar a los conciertos tradicionales. Un importante impulso a la elaboracion de mi concierto lo debo al recuerdo de la malograda violinista Ginette Neveu. Su version del concierto de Sibelius ha permanecido siempre dentro de mi. Por ese motivo, el primer movimiento Moderato-Allegro se inicia con una atmosfera contemplativa cercana a la del mencionado Concierto, en la que aparecen cautamente las principales ideas tematicas. Con un amplio desarrollo se llega a un lleno orquestal en el que estas ideas -dos ritmicas y dos melodicas- quedan reafirmadas. Un pasaje calmo y misterioso rememora la introduccion. Tras desdibujarse, irrumpen tres compases que nos llevan a la parte rapida del movimiento. Solista y orquesta establecen un combate dialectico de caracter dramatico. La inquietud desaparece hasta una tranquila e insinuante frase del clarinete. Esta sera recogida por el solista, quien, a base de una figuracion de tresillos cada vez mas rapidos apoyada por un pedal de la orquesta in crescendo, conduce hacia el momento mas dramatico del movimiento. De aqui nace la cadenza del solista, que se incia con suaves notas dobles. Finaliza con una progresion ascendente y el solista se coloca en el registro agudo para llamar la intervencion de la orquesta dentro de una atmosfera suave y transfigurada. Interiorizado es el segundo movimiento Adagio poco sostenuto e leggero. Con dos llamadas de las trompas respondidas por los violonchelos y contrabajos inicia el Adagio de caracter grave. El violin solista introduce y canta dos temas nostalgicos. El primero en el registro grave y el segundo, mas amplio, en el medio. Inicia el Misterioso e leggero, de caracter suave y delicado. Con el violin cantando en agudo. La constante figuracion de corcheas acelerara poco a poco el ritmo hasta que el solista a modo de cadenza provocara un dramatico lleno orquestal. De nuevo el Calmo, donde el solista, cada vez con menos ropaje orquestal, se despide serenamente. Una subida de dobles cuerdas a cargo del solista sirve para iniciar el Finale-Scherzo. Este, en ritmo de 6/8 y con caracter de rondo, nos transporta en un clima virtuosistico y despreocupado. Del tema alegre y jugueton presentado por el solista nacen los principales motivos, breves y concisos. Con una intrincada sucesion de rapidas sextas en doble cuerda se llega a un momento crispado y algo combativo que, sin embargo, se resolvera en un diminuendo que el solista recoge apaciblemente con las notas re-la para inciar la cadenza. Esta culmina con un suave rosario de notas en ligado para introducir de nuevo el tema principal. Un momento de suspension melodica sirve como despido antes de la breve y jovial coda final. La obra fue estrenada el 23 de septiembre de 2005 en el Teatre Monumental de Madrid por la Orquesta Sinfonica de RTVE con Markus Placci de solista y Uwe Mund de director. Whereas in past decades Urtext editions with assorted aspirations and readings by various editors were the primary points of departure in addressing Beethoven's piano sonatas, today it is more often the question of what significance so-called instructive editions have in the history of interpretation, what additional benefit is generated from them, and wherein lies their legitimacy. Unlike his teacher Hans von Bulow in his edition of the sonatas, Lamond did not allow any intervention in the music text per se. His indications give instead interpretive approaches, additionally inspiring today's musicians in the realization of the musical composition. By the beginning of the 20th century he was a successful and celebrated pianist, concertizing in the US and across much of Europe. He repeatedly caused a stir with his Beethoven projects such as performing sixteen sonatas as well as the Diabelli and Eroica variations within four days at the Queen's Hall in London (1925). Dating from this period is also his edition of Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas that first appeared from Breitkopf & Hartel in 1923. Frederic Lamond thus epitomizes Beethoven interpretation. Even today his name is still associated primarily with Beethoven. The present ,,Instructive Edition of Beethoven's 32 Piano Sonatas is a part of the ,,Breitkopf Originals series on the occasion of Beethoven's 250th Birthday in 2020. Apart from the established Urtext editions, this reissue opens up a fascinating view on the interpretation- and performance practice of one of the most important Beethoven interpreters in the 19th and 20th century.
