A flashback is an interesting psychological phenomenon: a seemingly random trigger can bring back long-forgotten memories from the subconscious mind. The composer underwent a similar experience before writing this piece. He was asked to write a piece for The National Youth Fanfare Band in the Netherlands, one which he heard perform many years ago. All of a sudden he remembered Deep Harmony, a piece frequently programmed back then. He used his own flashback-experience as an inspiration to weave an old English hymn into his new composition, much like a musical flashback. The right idea at the right moment, as this piece will prove!

Een flashback is een psychologisch fenomeen: een hedendaagse belevenis roept zomaar uit het niets herinneringen uit het verleden op. Zo verging het ook Jan de Haan, toen hij een muziekstuk voor het Nationaal Jeugd Fanfare Orkest inopdracht kreeg. Het is het orkest waarin hij zelf ooit speelde. Plotseling viel hem het werk Deep Harmony in, een werk dat hij destijds vaak had gespeeld. Zijn flashback op dit Engelse kerklied nam hij als inspiratiebronen hij verwerkte het in dit nieuwe muziekstuk. De juiste inval op het juiste moment, zoals nu iedereen kan horen!

Ein Flashback“ ist ein psychologisches Phänomen: Eine Erfahrung weckt scheinbar aus dem Nichts die Erinnerung an lang Zurückliegendes. So ging es auch Jan de Haan, als er ein Stück für ein Jugendauswahlorchester der Niederlande, in dem er selbst einst mitspielte, schreiben sollte. Plötzlich fiel ihm ein damals oft programmiertes Stück namens Deep Harmony ein und er nahm diesen Flashback als Inspiration, dieses englische Kirchenlied in seinem neuen Werk zu verarbeiten. Der richtige Einfall im richtigen Moment, wie das Resultat beweist!

Le flash-back est un phénomène psychologique. Des événements du passé, imprimés dans la mémoire long terme, resurgissent comme une réponse inconsciente et soudaine un stimulus lié une expérience antérieure.Cette œuvre a été composée l’occasion du cinquantième anniversaire de l’Orchestre de Fanfare National des Jeunes des Pays-Bas, une formation talentueuse, dont Jan de Haan fut lui-même membre, au cours des années 1960. Jeune musicien, il éprouvait un profond respect pour le chef d’alors, Piebe Bakker (1929-2002), un homme passionné, avec un style de direction très stimulant. En revenant sur cette période, quarante ans après, Jan de Haan a revécu lesnombreuses interprétations de la pièce Deep Harmony. La mélodie scintillante - extraite d’un cantique anglais - lui est alors apparue comme un flash-back et c’est comme un éclair mental qu’il a choisi de lui redonner vie dans le passage final de cette œuvre.

In this beautiful composition, melodic fragments of the hymn tune Beecher are morphed into a series of variations, showing the melody in various moods from expressive, then quiet and soft, to bright and triumphant in the end. Written as a testpiece in the 4th division for the Dutch Brass Band Championships in 2015, the music features challenging solo parts for cornet, soprano cornet, flugelhorn and euphonium. A great work for the concert stage!

In deze fraaie compositie zijn melodiefragmenten uit de hymne Beecher omgevormd tot een reeks variaties, waarbij de melodie wordt gepresenteerd in verschillende stemmingen, van rustig en zacht tot vrolijk en triomfantelijk tegen het slot. Beecher Variations, dat is geschreven als verplicht werk voor de Nederlandse Brassband Kampioenschappen van 2015, bevat uitdagende solopartijen voor cornet, sopraancornet, bugel en euphonium. Een weergaloos werk voor het concertpodium!

In diesem schönen Werk werden melodische Fragmente des Kirchenlieds Beecher in eine Reihe von Variationen verwandelt, welche die Melodie in verschiedenen Stimmungen von ausdrucksvoll über ruhig und leise, strahlend bis zu strahlend undtriumphal präsentieren. Als Pflichtstück in der 4. Division für die Holländischen Brass-Band-Meisterschaften 2015 geschrieben, enthält die Musik anspruchsvolle Solopartien für Cornet, Soprancornet, Flügelhorn und Euphonium. Marcho Brioso was commissioned by The Brioso Brass, a British-style brass band from Hokkaido, Japan. They gave the first performance in January 2012.The commission was for a bright and breezy march that the band could use as their theme tune, so Marcho Brioso falls into the composer’s series of Broadway-style marches, which includes Slipstream, The Bandwagon and Jubiloso. After a short introduction a solo cornet plays the main theme, accompanied by a euphonium counter-melody. A secondary phrase from the horns and baritones leads to a tutti version of the main theme which is followed by the traditional ‘bass’ strain. A change of key heralds the triosection, which features a cantabile melody on euphonium; this is then taken up by the full band after a short bridge passage and further change of key.This takes us back to the home key which sees a quiet staccato version of the main theme lead to a recapitulation and a short coda which brings the march to a close.

De première vond plaats in januari 2012.De componist kreeg het verzoek een vrolijke, luchtige mars te schrijven die de band als herkenningstune zou kunnen gebruiken. Marcho Brioso past daarom uitstekend in Philip Sparke’s serie van marsen in Broadwaystijl - waarin ook Slipstream, The Bandwagon en Jubiloso thuishoren.

Marcho Brioso wurde von The Brioso Brass, einer britisch geprägten Brass Band aus Hokkaido in Japan, in Auftrag gegeben. Das Stück wurde von der Band im Januar 2012 uraufgeführt.Gewünscht war ein heiterer, flotter Marsch, welcher sich als Erkennungsmelodie der Brass Band eignen sollte. So fällt Marcho Brioso in die Reihe der Märsche des Komponisten im Broadway-Stil, zu denen auch Slipstream, The Bandwagon und Jubiloso zählen.Nach einer kurzen Einleitung spielt ein Solo-Cornet das Hauptthema, begleitet von einer Gegenmelodie im Euphonium. Die Nebenphrase in den Hörnern und Baritonen führen zu einer Tutti-Version des Hauptthemas, die vomtraditionellen Bass“-Solo abgelöst wird. Ein Tonartwechsel kündigt den Trio-Teil an, der eine cantabile gespielte Melodie auf dem Euphonium enthält; diese wiederum wird nach einer kurzen Überleitung und einem weiteren Tonartwechsel von der gesamten Band aufgegriffen.Der letzte Wechsel führt zurück zur ursprünglichen Tonart, in welcher dann eine Staccato-Version des Hauptthemas eine Rekapitulation hervorbringt sowie eine Coda, die den Marsch zu seinem Ende führt.

La création mondiale de cette pièce eut lieu en janvier 2012.L’orchestre souhaitant une marche enjouée qui pourrait lui servir d’indicatif musical, Marcho Brioso s’inscrit dans la lignée des marches du compositeur : Jubiloso, Slipstream et The Bandwagon. Un style « broadwayien », des motifs fortement syncopés et quelques surprenantes et capricieuses mesures viennent troubler le rythme régulièrement cadencé de ces marches.Après une courte introduction, le cornet solo joue le thème principal, accompagné d’un contre-chant l’euphonium. Un second motif de huit mesures exécuté par les cors et les barytons mène une version tutti du thème principal. Puis une brève section intermédiaire est déléguée aux basses. Le changement de tonalité qui s’ensuit annonce le trio qui contient une mélodie cantabile confiée l’euphonium ; ce trio est ensuite repris par l’orchestre entier après un bref passage de transition et un autre changement de tonalité.Nous revenons ensuite la tonalité de départ pour un rappel du thème principal en une paisible version staccato et une courte coda, pour conclure cette marche brillante et sémillante.

Sinfonia Hungarica is a three-movement symphony that depicts the history of Hungary. All three movements were inspired by historical key figures, wars, and other important events from this country. This symphony is a celebration of Hungary’s millennium in 2001.The final movement is named after ISTVAN, the King who introduced Christianity into Hungary and who was crowned by Pope Silvestro II on January 1, 1001. A rather solemn start leads to another war-like passage, ending with some loud crashes. This symbolizes the fact that the body of the pagan Koppany was cut into four pieces, and sent to the four castles of the country as an example. After a quiet, almost religiousintermezzo, the National Hymn of Hungary is introduced. This broad “grandioso” ending also has a symbolic meaning: after ten centuries, Hungary has many reasons to look back on the past with pride, and to look forward to the future with optimism and confidence.

Dit stuk werd gecomponeerd in opdracht van het symfonisch blaasorkest Kiskunfélegyhaza uit Hongarije en opgedragen aan dirigent Ferenc Jankovski, burgemeester Jozsef Ficsor en Gabriella Kiss. De wereldpremière vond plaats op 31 maart2001 in Budapest (Hongarije) door het eerdergenoemde orkest onder leiding van de componist.Deze driedelige symfonie beschrijft de geschiedenis van Hongarije. Ein feierlicher Anfang leitet über in einen an Kriegsgetümmelerinnernden Abschnitt, der in lärmendem Getöse endet. Sie durchläuft das Werk wie ein roter Faden, der anfangs kaumwahrzunehmen ist und erst im Verlauf der Sinfonie immer deutlicher wird. Am Ende krönt sie das Werk in einer letzten prachtvollen Steigerung, in der das Orchester den majestätischen Klang einer Orgel annimmt.

A conclusione della sinfonia, il sublime inno conduce la banda in un’apoteosi finale, facendo apparire l’organico strumentale come un maestoso organo.

Hava Nagila (the title means ‘let us rejoice’) is perhaps the best known example of a style of Jewish music called ‘klezmer’. Klezmer music originated in the ‘shtetl’ (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe, where itinerant Jewish troubadours, known as ‘klezmorim’, had performed at celebrations, particularly weddings, since the early Middle Ages.‘Klezmer’ is a Yiddish term combining the Hebrew words ‘kley’ (instrument) and ‘zemer’ (song) and the roots of the style are found in secular melodies, popular dances, Jewish ‘hazanut’ (cantorial music) and also the ‘nigunim’, the wordless melodies intoned by the ‘Hasidim’ (orthodox Jews).Since the 16th century, lyrics hadbeen added to klezmer music, due to the ‘badkhn’ (the master of ceremony at weddings), to the ‘Purimshpil’ (the play of Esther at Purim) and to traditions of the Yiddish theatre, but the term gradually became synonymous with instrumental music, particularly featuring the violin and clarinet. The melody of Hava Nagila was adapted from a folk dance from the Romanian district of Bucovina. The commonly used text is taken from Psalm 118 of the Hebrew bible.

Hava Nagila (de titel betekent ‘laat ons gelukkig zijn’) is misschien wel het bekendste voorbeeld van klezmer, een Joodse muziekstijl.De klezmermuziek komt van oorsprong uit de sjtetls (dorpen) en de getto’s van Oost-Europa, waar rondtrekkende Joodse troubadours, bekend als klezmorim, al sinds de middeleeuwen hadden opgetreden bij feestelijkheden, en dan met name bruiloften.Klezmer is een Jiddische term waarin de Hebreeuwse woorden kley (instrument) en zemer (lied) zijn samengevoegd. Jahrhundert wurden die Klezmermelodien mit Texten versehen, was auf die ‚Badchan’ (Zeremonienmeister bei Hochzeiten), auf das ‚Purimshpil’ (Das Esther-Spiel zum Purimfest) und aufTraditionen des jiddischen Theaters zurückgeht. Der Begriff Klezmer wurde jedoch mit der Zeit gleichbedeutend mit Instrumentalmusik, im Besonderen mit den Instrumenten Violine und Klarinette. Die Melodie von Hava Nagila ist eine Adaption einesVolkstanzes aus der rumänischen Bukowina. Der üblicherweise verwendete Text stammt aus Psalm 118 der hebräischen Bibel.

Destination Moon was first performed by Cory Band at the 2017 European Championships in Ostend, Belgium, and is inspired by the Belgian comic-book hero Tintin. The first part is called ‘Science’ and describes the development of the theory of space travel. The second part is ‘Humanity’ which addresses human concerns and philosophies about our place in the universe. The third part is ‘The Launch’ which ends with a repetition of the words ‘Earth to Moon Rocket are you receiving me?’ as the rocket vanishes into a tiny speck in the sky.

Destination Moon werd voor het eerst vertolkt door de Cory Band, tijdens de Europese Brassband Kampioenschappen van 2017 in Oostende, België. Het werk is ge nspireerd op de avonturen van de Belgische stripheld Kuifje. Het eerste deel, ‘Science’, beschrijft de ontwikkeling van de theorie achter de ruimtevaart. Het tweede deel heet ‘Humanity’: het verklankt verschillende menselijke overwegingen en filosofieën rondom onze plaats in het universum; de titel van het derde deel is ‘The Launch’: dit gedeelte eindigt met een herhaling van de woorden ‘Earth to Moon Rocket are you receiving me?’ terwijl de raket verdwijnt tot hij nog slechts een stipje aan de hemel is.

Destination Moon wurde 2017 im Rahmen der 40. European Brass Band Championships in Ostende (Belgien) von der Cory Band uraufgeführt. Als Inspiration für das Stück diente der belgische Comic-Held Tintin (Tim und Struppi“). Der erste Teil, Science“, beschreibt die Entwicklung der Wissenschaftler im Bereich der Raumfahrt. Der zweite Teil, Humanity“, beschäftigt sich mit den menschlichen Gedanken und Philosophien über unseren Platz im Universum. Der dritte Teil, The Launch“, endet mit der Wiederholung der Worte Erde an Mondrakete können Sie mich hören?“, während die Mondrakete als winziger Fleck im Himmel verschwindet.

A stunning and heart-wrenching composition based on the Jewish folk son Shlof, Mayn Kind. You can hear the emotional content pour out of this piece written in memory of an outstanding orchestra director. The piece beginnings with original material to set the tone, followed by a clarinet solo on the song. It then develops through a variety of different harmonic presentation before building to a nice key change and climatic moment. The piece ends as it began, but with a more hopeful tone. An amazing piece.
Sleep, My Child was commissioned by the Madison Middle School Band and Orchestra in Tampa, Florida, and is dedicated to the memory of their Director of Orchestras Kevin Frye. Director of Bands Chris Shultz championed the commissioning of this piece to honor Kevin after he passed away in December 2016. Mr. Frye was a beloved member of the staff at Madison Middle as well as the music community of Tampa and the state of Florida. I was a personal friend of Kevin’s. We were in several musical groups together when we were young that were formative to both of our musical careers. I also guest conducted his Madison Middle School Orchestra several times over the past four years. His musicianship, teaching skills and love for his students were exemplary.When taking on the challenge of writing a piece to honor Kevin’s legacy, Mr. Shultz and I decided to try and include several important aspects of Kevin’s life into the piece. Kevin was proudly Jewish, a fantastic trumpet player and loved Jazz. With that in mind, and after a lot of research, a Jewish folk song Shlof, Mayn Kind was selected as the basis for the piece, not to be religious, but to honor his faith and heritage. Plus it is a beautiful song, and I felt the title reflected the sentiment I was looking to express, which is of someone taking rest after a long battle with illness. Thus, a lullaby seemed appropriate.I also wanted to incorporate Jazz into the piece, but in a concert setting, so you will hear as the piece develops, the harmonies of the folk song expand into ones found more commonly in Jazz compositions. Not in a far out way, but in a subtle way to again honor this part of his life. For example the climactic moment of the piece at the fermata in m. 57 is a Dbmaj9#11 chord. It appropriately give the piece the angst that I was looking for at this moment in the piece, while honoring the importance of Jazz in Kevin’s musical life.The piece was also conceived to include both the Madison band and orchestra in the performance at the premiere. I wanted the pieces to work separately by the band and separately by the orchestra, but I also wanted them to be able to play the piece together to honor Kevin.The piece begins with original material designed to set the mood of the piece with a tempo/style marking of pensive, but also as material that I used as connective musical tissue between statements of the folk song.  After this introduction, the folk song is presented by a solo violin (or clarinet) with orchestral accompaniment in a simple straight forward presentation of the song. This is followed by a woodwind section statement of the folk song accompanied by muted trumpets. During this presentation the harmony starts to expand with more color notes in the chords. The low brass are added half way through this statement to add depth and lushness.The introductory material returns, but with some angry hits in the lower voices. This leads to a full ensemble state of new material that is used to transition to the climax of the piece, and to build tension. After the build, the piece modulates to a shortened statement of the folk song with more advanced harmonies and an active counter line in the violas, horns, saxes and first clarinets to further build the tension.  This tension is released at the fermata in m. 57, as mentioned above. After a thoughtful pause, the piece concludes with a completion of the folk song again with a solo violin (or clarinet) followed by a return of the introductory material to tie the piece together. The piece ends hopeful, with a solo trumpet (Kevin’s instrument) that is dissonant at first, but then resolves as if to say - everything will be OK! It has been my distinct honor to have been asked to write this piece in Kevin’s memory! I hope that in some small way the piece helps to bring comfort to his family, students, colleagues and to all those that knew him!–Larry ClarkLakeland, FL  2017.
