Isaac Albéniz: Iberia 4: Piano: Instrumental Album

Isaac Albeniz (1860-1909) began his musical life as a piano prodigy in Barcelona at the age of four and it is as a prolific composer of solo works for the pianoforte that we must celebrate him most. This Dover edition presents two of Albeniz' best known works in authoritative editions: the piano suite Iberia generally considered to be his masterpiece; and the album leaves Espana which contain the 'Tango' his most popular individual work. Iberia is a collection of twelve musical scenes of Spanish life principally Andalusian written between 1906 and 1909. Its brilliant and complex character is suffused with the rhythms and harmonies of Spanish popular music to which Albenizturned for inspiration in the last years of his life. Espana an earlier work first published in 1890 is made up of six piano pieces that subtly reflect the influences of the piano literature of the 19th century-salon and like Iberia the harmony and style of Impressionism which Albeniz undeniably helped to establish.

The first book of Albéniz’ four-part cycle “Iberia” has already been published in an acclaimed Henle Urtext edition and many pianists are now eagerly awaiting the remaining ones. The second book in thiscollection of melodious portraits of Spanish places is now available. In “Rondeña” “Almería” and “Triana” Albéniz once again fuses his knowledge of European classical musicwith elements of Spanish folk music although he hardly ever directly cites the latter but rather reinvents it in an authentic manner. The rhythmic and colourful effects will delight both players and listeners.

The 4th and final set of movements of Albeniz's Iberia suite capturing the spirit beauty and energy of the Spanish landscape. These stunningly evocative 'impressions' are infused with dance rhythms Andalusian harmonies and delicate ornate decorations.

The Spanish composer and pianist Isaac Albeniz (1860-1909) was one of the leading members of the Nationalist school that dominated Spanish music at the turn of the last century. He left two pieces unfinished at the time of his death: Azulejos was completed by Enrique Granados while Navarra was finished by Albéniz?s pupil the French composer Déodat de Séverac (1872-1921) and published in 1912. It was originally intended to form part of the Iberia Suite but the composer gave up on it after declaring it to be 'shamelessly cheap'. Nevertheless this work for solo Piano remains a worthwhile addition to therepertoire.

Isaac Albéniz was a Spanish composer and Pianist. His best known work is the collection of '12 Piano pieces' called 'Iberia' which have lots of exciting Spanish rhythms. These pieces arenotoriously difficult to play.  Sevilla follows Albéniz's tricky '12 Piano pieces' and promises to be a challenging addition to any Flautists repertoire guaranteed toimpress any audience. Score-Carlos Surinach?was a Catalan Spanish-born composer and conductor. He composed three ballet scores for the esteemed choreographer Martha Graham: ?Embattled Garden? (1958) ?Acrobats of God? (1960) and ?The Owl and the Pussycat? (1978). He also composed for the Joffrey Ballet (?Feast of Ashes?). Surinach also orchestrated part of Isaac Albéniz's Piano suite ?Iberia?.Surinach's renowned Concerto For String Orchestra?was adopted by Val Caniparoli for the ballet ?Death of a Moth?. G.
