March of the Robot Army was commissioned by Linda Anzolin & Giordano-Bruno Tedeschi for Campobanda 2019, with funds made available by JUST ITALIA. Campobanda is an Italian summer music camp for 8- to 18-year-olds (held inCamposilvano in 2019) which has a different theme every year. The theme for 2019 was ‘science fiction’, so composer Philip Sparke chose to write a robot march. After a quirky introduction featuring trumpet calls and chromaticfigures, the main theme appears in a minor mode on clarinet and tenor sax and is then taken up by the full band. A change of key heralds a new theme, led by the trumpet and again repeated by the full ensemble. A further change ofkey introduces a legato ‘trio’ melody over a rather robotic accompaniment: instruments are added bit by bit until a climax is reached. Small motifs from the introduction then lead back to a full recapitulation, revisiting thefirst two themes in new guises before finishing the march with a flourish.

March of the Robot Army werd geschreven in opdracht van Linda Anzolin & Giordano-Bruno Tedeschi voor Campobanda 2019: de financiering werd mogelijk gemaakt door JUST ITALIA. Campobanda is een Italiaans zomermuziekkamp vooracht- tot achttienjarigen (dat in 2019 werd gehouden in Camposilvano) met elk jaar een ander thema. Het thema voor 2019 was sciencefiction, dus besloot componist Philip Sparke een robotmars te schrijven. Na een grilligeinleiding met trompetsignalen en chromatische motieven verschijnt het hoofdthema in mineur op klarinet en tenorsax, waarna het door het hele orkest wordt overgenomen. Een verandering van toonsoort kondigt een nieuw thema aan, weeringeleid door de trompet en herhaald door het volledige ensemble. Een verdere toonsoortverandering introduceert een legato ‘triomelodie’ boven een nogal robotachtige begeleiding: er worden stapsgewijs instrumenten toegevoegd totde muziek uitmondt in een hoogtepunt. Korte figuren uit de inleiding nemen ons dan mee naar een volledige herneming, met een terugkeer naar de eerste twee thema’s in een nieuwe gedaante, waarna de mars in stijl wordt afgesloten.

Das italienische Sommermusikcamp Campobanda für 8- bis18-Jährige fand 2019 in Camposilvano statt und hat jedes Jahr ein anderes Motto. 2019 lautete das Thema Science Fiction“, daher entschied sich der Komponist Philip Sparke dazu, einen Robotermarsch zu schreiben. Nach einerskurrilen Einleitung mit Trompetenrufen und chromatischen Figuren erklingt in Klarinetten und Tenorsaxophonen das Hauptthema in Moll, das dann vom gesamten Orchester aufgegriffen werd. Ein Tonartwechsel kündigt ein neues Thema an,das von der Trompete vorgestellt und anschließend vom gesamten Ensemble wiederholt wird. Ein weiterer Tonartwechsel führt zu einem melodischen, legato gespielten Trio-Abschnitt über einer roboterhaften Begleitung. Nach und nachkommen weitere Instrumente hinzu, bis der Höhepunkt erreicht ist. Kleine Motive aus der Einleitung führen dann zu einer Reprise, wobei die ersten beiden Themen in neuer Gestalt wieder aufgegriffen werden, bevor der Marsch zum Endehin noch einmal musikalisch aufblüht.

March of the Robot Army est une commande de Linda Anzolin et Giordano-Bruno Tedeschi pour Campobanda 2019, gr ce des fonds mis disposition par JUST ITALIA. Destinée aux jeunes de 8 18 ans, Campobanda est une école demusique d’été dont le thème change chaque année. Celui de l’édition 2019 étant « sciencefiction », Philip Sparke décida d’écrire une marche pour robots. Après une introduction insolite rassemblant appels de trompette et figureschromatiques, le premier thème apparaît dans un mode mineur la clarinette et au saxophone ténor avant d’être repris par l’orchestre entier. Un changement de tonalité annonce un nouveau thème, mené par la trompette et repris,encore une fois, par l’orchestre entier. Un autre changement de tonalité introduit une mélodie legato « en trio » sur un accompagnement quelque peu robotique : divers instruments s’y ajoutent progressivement pour aboutir unclimax. Des petits motifs tirés de l’introduction mènent une récapitulation complète qui reprend les deux premiers thèmes sous des formes différentes, avant de conclure la marche avec un bouquet final.

Sbandiamo! is a joyous—and swinging—work, taking its title from the wind music event held annually in the medieval Italian city of Gubbio, Umbria in which various bands from all over Italy participate. The first performance of this piece was given at the Piazza Grande, Gubbio, under the baton of the composer himself, with a wind band of some 250 musicians. A stately introduction, with festive percussion, is followed by a catchy theme in alternating pop and march rhythms. The opening theme then returns as a marcia cantabile, and the work is brought to a grand and compelling conclusion.

Sbandiamo! is zowel een vreugdevol als swingend werk. De titel verwijst naar het gelijknamige blaasmuziekevenement in de middeleeuwse stad Gubbio in Umbrië (Italië). Daar klonk op de Piazza Grande de première met een blaasorkest bestaande uit ongeveer 250 musici, onder leiding van de componist. Elk jaar nemen diverse orkesten uit heel Italië deel aan dit evenement. Een statige inleiding met feestelijk slagwerk wordt gevolgd door een pakkend thema in afwisselende pop- en marsritmes. Dan keert het beginthema terug als marcia cantabile en eindigt het werk meeslepend en groots.

Sbandiamo! ist ein fröhliches und schwungvolles Werk. Der Titel bezieht sich auf die gleichnamige Blasmusik-Veranstaltung in der mittelalterlichen Stadt Gubbio in Umbrien (Italien). Dort fand auch die Uraufführung des Stückes mit einem etwa 250-köpfigen Blasorchester unter der Leitung des Komponisten auf der Piazza Grande statt. Jedes Jahr nehmen an dieser Veranstaltung verschiedene Blasorchester aus ganz Italien teil. Auf die majestätische Einleitung mit festlichem Schlagwerk folgt ein eingängiges Thema mit wechselnden Posp- und Marschrhythmen. Sbandiamo! Eine Komposition, die sowohl den Musikern als auch ihrem Publikum gefallen wird.

Sbandiamo ! est une œuvre joyeuse qui fait swinguer ! Son titre fait référence la rencontre d’orchestres d’harmonie qui regroupe chaque année des orchestres de toute l’Italie dans la ville médiévale de Gubbio en Ombrie (Italie). L , sur la Piazza Grande, l’œuvre a été créée sous la direction du compositeur avec une ensemble d’environ 250 musiciens. Une introduction grandiose avec de la percussion festive est suivie d’un thème entraînant, alternant entre des rythmes de pop et de marche. Puis, on retrouve le thème d’ouverture dans la forme d’une marcia cantabile, et l’œuvre est menée sa fin grandiose et captivante.

Sbandiamo! è un brano gioioso e swing il cui titolo è tratto dalla rassegna dedicata ai fiati che si tiene nella cittadina medioevale di Gubbio una volta all’anno, e che vede chiamate a raccolta varie bande provenienti da ogni parte d’Italia. La prima esecuzione del brano è avvenuta nella Piazza Grande di Gubbio, sotto la guida dello stesso compositore con una banda di 250 strumentisti a fiato. Una maestosa introduzione con festose percussioni è seguita da un tema accattivante che alterna ritmi pop e di marcia. Il tema iniziale ritorna poi come una marcia cantabile e il brano si avvia ad una grande ed irresistibile conclusione.

Hayato Hirose composed this dramatic piece based on the great journey of Marco Polo, Italian traveller and one of the first Europeans ever to visit Asia. In the 13th century, he made a long journey from Venice to Mongolia with his father. After his arrival, he was sent to the various regions in Asia by the Mongolian government to take notes about the culture, the people, and the way of life in those areas. Captain Marco is het eerste werk van Hayato Hirose voor blaasorkest. Hij componeerde het in 1998. Met dit dramatische werk smeedt de Japanse Hirose een muzikale band tussen Europa en Azie, waarbij de grote zeevaarder Marco Polo deverbindende factor is. Marco Polo was niet alleen een van de eerste grote ontdekkingsreizigers ooit, hij hield ook een logboek bij van zijn avonturen. In zijn tijd deed het letterlijk een boekje open over het verre Oosten. Nog steedsspreekt deze roemruchte kapitein tot de verbeelding. In ieder geval tot die van de componist, die er een mooie compositie aan wijdde...

Captain Marco ist Hayato Hiroses erstes Werk für Blasorchester und wurde im Jahr 1998 komponiert. In diesem dramatischen Werk knüpft der Japaner Hirose ein musikalisches Band zwischen Europa und Asien, indem er das Leben des berühmten Handelsreisenden Marco Polo vertont. Kapitan Marco war nicht nur einer der ersten grossen Seefahrer und Entdecker überhaupt, sondern er hinterliess auch seine Erfahrungen in einem Buch, das den Europaern damals das ferne Asien erklarte und offensichtlich auch heute noch sehr inspirierend ist.

Captain Marco est la premiere oeuvre pour orchestre d'harmonie d'Hayato Hirose, ecrite en 1998. Le compositeur nous emmene sur les traces du celebre aventurier et marchand venitien, Marco Polo, qui fut l'un des premiers Europeens a se rendre en Extreme-Orient. Hayato Hirose nous livre une oeuvre expressive, intense et epique.

In 1786 Mozart composed his wonderful opera Le Nozze di Figaro (KV 492). The Italian libretto, based on the play Le mariage de Figaro by Beaumarchais, was written by Lorenzo da Ponte—who also made the libretti of Mozart's opera's Don Giovanni and Cosi fan tutte. In the opera Le Nozze di Figaro, Count Almaviva tries to seduce the fiancee of Figaro, his valet. Eventually, through four acts full of complicated intrigue, he is outwitted. In his music, Mozart—at times in a humorous way—reflects the numerous social and erotic intrigues with both empathy and insight. The brilliant overture is just as vivacious and witty as the opera itself. Mozart delightfullyanticipates the passion and playful love that is to come. The skillful transcription for concert band by Tohru Takahashi certainly does justice to this appealing music.

De muziek van Mozarts Cosi fan tutte werd door tijdgenoten meteen bejubeld. Deze luisterrijke opera is vandaag de dag nog steeds geliefd en wordt wereldwijd veel uitgevoerd. Het is heel goed mogelijk dat de vrij korte ouverture vanCosi fan tutte is bedoeld als sfeerbeschrijving van een koffiehuis waarin heftig gedebatteerd wordt. De herhaalde en stijgende melodieen zouden lachen en discussieren kunnen suggereren. Deze suggestie wordt nog versterktdoor de dynamische contrasten in het stuk.

Cosi fan tutte ist eine der spaten Opern Mozarts und sicherlich auch eine seiner besten. Cosi fan tutte bedeutet so viel wie so sind sie alle und bezieht sich auf die Unzuverlassigkeit des weiblichen Geschlechts in Liebesdingen. Dies war ein ziemlich heikles Thema zu Mozarts Zeiten und es ist daher kaum verwunderlich, dass die Oper als unmoralisch galt, dennoch von Beginn an sehr beliebt war. Wil van der Beek setzte die eher kurze, dynamisch kontrastive Ouverture fur Blasorchester um.

More Classical Highlights is the follow-up to Classical Highlights, a collection featuring arrangements of classical themes dating from the 17th century up to the19th century. The parts are quite easy and attractively written, but the arrangements stay as faithful as possible to the original works. Baroque music is represented with two highlights: the well-known Canon by Pachelbel may well be the most performed 17th century composition. The power of the piece lies in a bass line of only eight notes, above which the melodic line of the round itself develops. Réjouissance from Music for the Royal Fireworks is a very joyful composition bythe Anglo-German baroque composer Handel. The 18th century classical style gives us the refined minuet by Boccherini, the Italian composer who wrote a wealth of chamber music. The 19th century features in three famous works: the lively Marche Militaire No 1 by the Austrian composer Schubert originates from 3 Marches Militaires for four-handed piano. The Can Can from Orphée aux enfers (Orpheus in the Underworld) is the best-known separately performed piece by the operetta composer Offenbach. Following this exciting dance music there is the beautiful, lofty Largo theme from the second movement of Czech composer Dvorákâ??s From the New World Symphony. In short: Six varying arrangements - challenging and very suitable for performances!

De partijen zijn eenvoudig en aantrekkelijk geschreven; tegelijkertijd blijven de arrangementen dicht bij het origineel. De barokmuziek is vertegenwoordigd met twee highlights. More Classical Highlights, qui fait suite au recueil Classical Highlights, rassemble une collection dâ??arrangements de thèmes classiques couvrant une période de trois siècles, du XVIIe au XIXe siècle. Les diverses parties instrumentales sont faciles et agréables jouer, mais les arrangements restent néanmoins fidèles aux compositions originales. La musique baroque est représentée par deux oeuvres toujours appréciées. Parmi toutes les compositions du XVIIe siècle, le célèbre Canon de Pachelbel est peut-être celle que lâ??on entend le plus souvent. Sa puissance réside dans une simple ligne de basse de huit notes par-dessus laquelle se développe le motif ducanon lui-même. Réjouissance, tirée de Music for the Royal Fireworks, est une pièce très enjouée du compositeur baroque anglo-allemand Haendel. Le style classique du XVIIIe siècle est inclus sous la forme dâ??un élégant menuet de Boccherini, un compositeur italien qui a écrit une quantité de musique de chambre. Le XIXe siècle est évoqué par trois oeuvres célèbres. La dynamique Marche militaire n° 1, du compositeur autrichien Schubert, extrait des Trois marches militaires pour piano quatre mains. Hora Est! (Latin for ‘it is time!’) was composed to bid adieu to Sjoerd de Boer’s following forty years as conductor of the Chr. Fanfare Band, based in the town of Wjelsryp in the Netherlands. In the Netherlands, this small phrase, hora est, is traditionally said upon awarding a university doctorate at graduation ceremonies. The composition was written with Sjoerd de Boer firmly in mind, mirroring various aspects of his life. The main motif of the work consists of three notes, forming his initials: S (Eb) D B. At a certain point, the music is interrupted by a thunderstorm and heavy rain (forever a bad omen: the debut for this work took place a day after such a deluge, but fortunately their open-air concert was met with clear blue skies.) The fanfare then plays an Italianesque march, with the motif of de Boer’s initials interwoven throughout. The work re-uses this motif twice towards the end of the piece as one might expect, by the saxophones to create a festive, driven and virtuosic atmosphere. Finally, the work comes to an end with the initials motif played across the ensemble in complete unison. The powerful closing chords symbolise a fond farewell to de Boer: a driven and extremely capable conductor whose musical mark on Concordia will be felt for years to come. Hora Est! is suitable as a contest piece and would be a definite highlight for any upcoming concert.

Hora Est! is gecomponeerd ter gelegenheid van het afscheid van Sjoerd de Boer als dirigent van Chr. Fanfarekorps Concordia uit Wjelsryp (Friesland), na maar liefst veertig jaar. Hora Est! is Latijn voor ‘Het is tijd!’. Het zinnetje wordt traditioneel uitgesproken bij een promotie tot doctor op de universiteit, op het moment dat de vastgestelde tijd voor verdediging van het proefschrift om is. De pedel komt dan binnen en stampt met zijn staf op de grond terwijl hij deze woorden roept. In dat opzicht verwijst de titel naar de voormalige universiteitsstad Franeker, de woonplaats van Sjoerd en de stad waar hij jaren lang leraar muziek was aan de christelijke scholengemeenschap. Anderzijds verwijst de titel naar zijn afscheid van Concordia: ‘Het is tijd!’.

The introductory theme of this composition echoes the majestic size of the mountains that are visible from the picture-postcard Cortina d’Ampezzo—the so called Queen of the Dolomites. Then we hear a lyrical theme, in which we feel the peacefulness of the surrounding countryside. We can even hear the hustle and bustle of the popular ski resort, before the two opening themes return in reverse order to bring this musical sight-seeing excursion to a close.

Jacob de Haan neemt ons mee naar de majestueuze bergen rondom het schilderachtige Italiaanse bergdorp Cortina d’Ampezzo, ook bekend als de koningin van de Dolomieten. Het beginthema verbeeldt de imposante rotsformaties die je rondom je ziet in Cortina. Dan klinkt een lyrisch thema, refererend aan het vredige berglandschap van deze contreien. Ook de bedrijvigheid van het geliefde wintersportdorp weerklinkt in deze mooie compositie. Beide thema’s komen nog één keer terug in omgekeerde volgorde om tenslotte dit muzikale panorama te besluiten.

Im Eingangsthema dieser Komposition hallt die majestätische Größe der Bergformation wider, die vom malerischen Cortina d’Ampezzo - der so genannten Königin der Dolomiten“ - aus sichtbar ist. Dann erklingt ein lyrisches Thema, in dem der Frieden der umliegenden Berglandschaft zu spüren ist. Auch die Betriebsamkeit des beliebten Wintersportortes ist zu hören, bevor die beiden Eingangsthemen in umgekehrter Reihenfolge den musikalischen Rundblick beenden.

Il est suivi d’un thème lyrique qui évoque la tranquillité du cadre ainsi que les maisons nichées dans la vallée. De retour en ville, nous entendons les accents joyeux de l’harmonie locale qui joue pour les vacanciers descendant des téléphériques. L’œuvre s’achève avec les sons grandioses du motif initial, qui exprime nouveau la beauté imposante de la couronne montagneuse.

Cortina d’Ampezzo è anche chiamata “la regina delle Dolomiti” per la bellezza mozzafiato del suo paesaggio. Cortina è la meta obbligatoria invernale di VIP italiani ma anche di molti turisti desiderosi di affrontare le splendide piste d’inverno e gli innumerevoli sentieri per indimenticabili passeggiate d’estate. La musica di Jacob de Haan riflette la sublime bellezza dei paesaggi ed è un vero omaggio alla natura.
