The De Haske String Orchestra Series offers attractive pieces especially composed and arranged for string orchestras. Students and teachers are treated to a great variety of musical styles. Each part presents a challenge to the player. The Viola part can be replaced by a 3rd Violin part, and the Double bass part can be replaced by a 2nd Cello part. The Piano part is mainly meant for support, but it occasionally adds new motifs as well.

De stukken zijn geschreven in verschillende stijlen: van klassiek en folk tot moderne, populaire muziek. Iedere partij is zo geschreven dat elke speler in het orkest een uitdaging heeft. De partij voor altviool kan door een derde viool worden vervangen. De partij voor contrabas kan ook door een tweede cello worden gespeeld. De pianopartij dient als ondersteuning, maar voegt soms ook nieuwe motieven toe aan de muziek.

Jos van den Dongen liet zich door Italië inspireren toen hij deze vierdelige suite schreef.

The depth and inventiveness of Amanda Harberg’s SUITE FOR WIND QUINTET can only be described as remarkable. Harberg combines the rich tradition of renaissance and baroque dance suites with her own American voice, stirring up dramatic, exciting sounds and stories. Cantus uses the imitative entries of renaissance motets as a jumping off point into a more contemporary world. The playfully virtuosic Furlana refers to the Italian folk dance rhythm in 6, punctuated by lots of unexpected 5’s. Fantasia hints at being a lullaby with an animated and jazz-influenced middle section, and the closing Cabaletta is true to its 19th-century meaning of a rousing closing section following beautiful lyricism. SUITE FOR WIND QUINTET was commissioned and premiered by the Dorian Wind Quintet.
Amanda Harberg’s Suite for Wind Quintet was commissioned by the Dorian Wind Quintet in 2017. The piece was the result of a conversation in a bar between Harberg, Dorian’s flutist Gretchen Pusch and Pusch’s husband Richard Bayles, on the occasion of Dorian’s clarinetist Ben Fingland’s 40th birthday party. A year and a half later, the Dorian Wind Quintet gave the world premiere of Harberg’s quintet at Bargemusic, and has incorporated it into their repertoire ever since. Suite for Wind Quintet is in four movements- 1. Cantus, 2. Furlana, 3. Fantasia and 4. Cabaletta. The melodic material heard in the very opening of the piece can be heard recurring and transforming throughout the four movements, until it unites triumphantly in the final coda with the theme of the concluding movement. The piece was inspired by the concept of placing Renaissance and Baroque-inspired dance suites into Harberg’s idiom as a 21st century composer.

George Berg’s eight keyboard suites, Op. 5, were published in London around 1760, while the composer was travelling in Italy. They are his most varied and resourceful compositions, following generally in the tradition of Handel’s suites but adding stylistic elements culled from Italian, German and French music in a playfully eclectic manner. This sparkling, idiomatic music – barely known until now – is equally suitable for private enjoyment and concert use.

Le premier mouvement, Aeolian Chant, est basé sur un thème d'un ami à moi (qui n'est pas musicien !) et est développé avec quelques autres idées dans un style semi-improvisé, et ne met en avant que les cordes. J'ai combiné une mélodie italienne du XIVe siècle avec une ancienne danse campagnarde anglaise pour le deuxième mouvement, Double Dance, qui introduit les instruments à vent. Le troisième mouvement, Ballad, est ici révisé par rapport à sa version originale et inclut maintenant le thème à la clarinette avec un accompagnement obligé de guitare. Le dernier mouvement, Toccata, est rapide, mais pas aussi difficile qu'il n'en a l'air, ce qui plaira à la plupart des interprètes !

The first movement, Aeolian Chant, is based on a theme by a friend of mine, (not a musician!) and is developed with some other ideas in a semi-improvisatory style and features only strings. I combined a 14th Century Italian melody with an old English country dance for the second movement, Double Dance, which introduces the wind instruments. The third movement, Ballad, is here revised from its original version and now includes the theme on clarinet with guitar obbligato. The last movement, Toccata, is fast, but not as difficult as it sounds, which will appeal to most players!
