Format : Score and Parts
This nicely paced and skillfully orchestrated suite characterizes the three main categories of ancient English folk dances. The opening Sword Dance is lively in nature and contrasts with the WaltzSong style of the second movement. The concluding movement is a Morris Dance typified by a rustic nature and dancers with pads of bells to accentuate the rhythm. The result is an elegant work for band with vibrance and energy. Troika is a Russian word that means a group of three but it also means a light Russian sleigh pulled by three horses. Christmas Troika portrays the joy of Christmas via a musical sleigh-ride. Listen as the glistening snow crinkles beneath the weight of the sleigh and the hooves of the prancing horses as it travels through the countryside. One can almost see the frost on the trees and hear the wind blow and the sleigh-bells ring as the tune O Come, All Ye Faithful winds its way through the music.

This work for Tuba and Brass Band was commissioned by and written for internationally renowned tuba soloist Steve Sykes. The Tuba plays four notes (F, Bb, G, C) during the opening. All the themes and much of the harmonic structure are based on these fours notes and their permutations. The soloist receives ample opportunity to showcase his or her technical prowess and expressive capabilities. Fantasia for Tuba also provides plenty of interaction between the soloist and brass band.In de loop der eeuwen is schitterende kerstmuziek geschreven. In de dertiende eeuw ontstond March of the Three Kings.

Commissioned by the Oregon Symphonic Band in Portland, Bridge of the Gods is a dramatic three-movement symphonic poem presenting the colorful legend told by the Native American Klickitatst about the origins of the volcanic mountains of the Cascade range and legendary bridge. The first movement “Saghalie” pays tribute to the powerful chief of all gods and is based on a majestic fanfare theme. The 2nd movement captures the beauty of the maiden “Loowit” with haunting flute and english horns solos accompanied by soft chanting voices. The final movement “Tanmahawis” utilizes stark clusters, jagged melodic fragments and rhythmic percussive energy as it depicts the destruction of the mighty bridge. Duration: 8:50Recorded by the Oregon Symphonic Band – Michael Burch-Pesses, conductor
