Inspiration was commissioned by the Solothurnischer Kanotonal Musikverband in Switzerland in 1993. The composition begins with an A-theme written in a Phrygian tonality and after an enormous climax moves on into a quicker B-section characterized by the use of wide interval jumps. Then follows the development in which both themes return individually and together. Peace and quiet is restored in the slow middle movement based on the B-theme. The movement comes to a close with a tutti B-theme brutally interrupted by fragments from the A-theme. Without a break the final movement of this contrastive piece develops from these fragments. The theme of this extremelyrhythmical closing movement is built up of elements from the A-theme whilst the B-theme (from the slow middle movement) returns in full once more. Before the piece comes to a close in a resounding fortissimo the cornet soloist performs the A-theme from the back of the auditorium to special effect.

The inspiration for this three-part work goes back to the International European Youth Wind Music Festival, of which the patron has been Jacob de Haan several times. It begins in a festive march tempo, then sacred music, instrumental groups playing off_x001E_stage and a little march for brass and _x001D_flutes. The third movement is a parade in which the various sections of the ensemble head towards the stage from different directions. Even without the effective choreography of the musicians, Call of the Valley is an impressive concert band composition.Jacob de Haan haalde zijn inspiratie voor dit driedelige werk bij het Hessische kuuroord Bad Orb en het tweejaarlijkse Blaasmuziekfestival van de Europese Jeugd, waarvan hij meerdere keren beschermheer was. In het werk verwerkte de componist verschillende e_x001D_ecten die betrekking hebben op het festival. Zo hoort men in de vallei verschillende orkesten door elkaar spelen, een indrukwekkend e_x001D_ect dat ook in de compositie werd verwerkt. Ook kan men ervoor kiezen om tijdens het werk het orkest op te splitsen en het podium te laten verlaten en marcherend weer richting podium te stappen. Een spectaculair en vernieuwend werk!Die Inspiration für dieses dreiteilige Werk geht auf das Internationale Blasmusikfest der Jugend Europas zurück, dessen Schirmherr schon mehrfach Jacob de Haan war. Es beginnt in festlich marschierendem Tempo, gefolgt von sakraler Musik, abseits der Bühne spielenden Instrumentengruppen und einem kleinen Marsch für Blechbläser und Flöten. Der dritte Satz ist eine Parade, bei der sich das geteilte Orchester aus verschiedenen Richtungen auf die Bühne zu bewegt. Auch ohne die effektvolle Positionierung der Musiker ist Call of the Valley ein eindrucksvolles Blasorchesterwerk.Call of the Valley s’ouvre sur un tempo festif en forme de marche. Des sonorités majestueuses dessinent un concert de musique sacrée. Puis deux groupes instrumentaux quittent la scène et exécutent leurs parties distance. Un groupe de saxophones interprète une valse, un autre groupe réunissant cuivres et _x001D_fl tes joue une marche. la fin de l’oeuvre, l’orchestre reprend les thèmes des deux groupes tandis que ceux-ci reviennent vers la scène. Une fois arrivés, ils restent face au public alors que résonne l’accord _x001C_final.Un festival di musica per _x001E_ati per banda giovanile che si tiene a Hesse in Germania, e al quale Jacob de Haan ha più volte partecipato in veste di giurato, è servito da ispirazione per comporre questo brano. L’inizio vede un tempo festivo che simboleggia l’arrivo delle bande. Sonorit maestose disegnano un concerto di musica sacra, seguite da suoni che evocano le interpretazioni di varie orchestre. Un gruppo di sax interpreta un piccolo valzer, un altro gruppo che unisce ottoni, _x001D_auti e ottavino suona una piccola marcia. Nel _x001E_finale dell’opera, l’orchestra riprende i temi dei due gruppi.

This Latin mass for choir and wind band was composed in honour of Saint Cecilia’s feast day, Saint Cecilia being the patroness of musicians. For this reason, many ensembles have annual concerts dedicated to Saint Cecila, which was the inspiration forthis piece. It is a festive, optimistic, but also comforting work, which in style perfectly suits the character of Saint Cecilia’s Feast Day. After Missa Brevis, Missa Katharina and The Gospel Mass, Missa Santa Cecilia isthe fourth published mass by the Dutch composer Jacob de Haan.Deze Latijnse mis voor koor en harmonieorkest is gecomponeerd ter ere van de feestdag van Sint-Cecilia. Deze heilige is de patrones van de musici. Talrijke muziekverenigingen en koren organiseren elk jaar concerten ter ere van Sint-Cecilia, eengegeven dat Jacob de Haan inspireerde dit werk te schrijven. Het is een feestelijk, optimistisch, maar ook troostend werk, dat qua stijl uitstekend past bij het karakter van het Sint-Ceciliafeest. Es handelt sich um ein festliches, optimistisches, aber auch beruhigendes Werk, das stilistisch perfekt zum Gedenktag der heiligen Cäcilia passt. Nach der Missa Brevis, der Missa Katharina und The GospelMass ist die Missa Santa Cecilia die vierte Messe des holländischen Komponisten Jacob de Haan, die nun veröffentlicht wird.Cette messe latine pour chorale et orchestre d’harmonie fut composée en l’honneur du jour de fête de la Sainte Cécile, la patronne des musiciens. Pour cette raison, beaucoup d’ensembles ont des concerts annuels dédiés la Sainte Cécile, ce qui futla source d’inspiration pour ce morceau. Le style festif, optimiste, mais aussi réconfortant de cette œuvre convient parfaitement au caractère du jour de fête de la Sainte Cécile. Après Missa Brevis, Missa Katharina et The GospelMass, Missa Santa Cecilia est la quatrième messe écrite par le compositeur néerlandais Jacob de Haan.

Every year a competition for wind orchestras and brass bands takes place in Wallberg, Switzerland. Apart from a hymn and a solo piece, all orchestras also have a compulsory piece to play. The commission to create a compulsory piece for the 2012 competition fell to Jan de Haan. The composition is entitled Musica Helvetica. It takes the form of a three-part concert work, in which the last two parts flow directly from one to the other. The first part, Musica Prima, is a brisk virtuoso opening with jazz flavours woven in. The following section, Musica Sacra, offers a contrast with an extraordinarily colourful instrumentation for the gorgeous main theme. Thefinal part, Musica Alpina, is inspired by the great variety of scenery in Switzerland. With its witty humour it makes a worthy conclusion to this beautiful tryptich. In het Zwitserse Wallberg wordt ieder jaar een concours voor harmonieorkesten en brassbands georganiseerd. Naast een hymne en een solowerk dienen alle orkesten een verplicht werk uit te voeren. Voor het concours van 2012 werd eenopdracht verstrekt aan Jan de Haan. De compositie kreeg Musica Helvetica als titel mee. Het gaat om een driedelig concertwerk waarvan de laatste twee delen onafgebroken in elkaar overgaan. Het eerste deel, Musica Prima,is een virtuoze en flitsende opening met hier en daar jazzy invloeden. In contrast daarmee staat het expressieve volgende deel, Musica Sacra, waarin het gedragen hoofdthema prachtig wordt uitgewerkt - de instrumentatieis hier buitengewoon kleurrijk. Het afsluitende deel, Musica Alpina, is ge nspireerd op het afwisselende landschap van Zwitserland. Het is grillig van structuur en vormt een waardige afsluiting van dit fraaie drieluik.Im schweizerischen Wallberg wird jedes Jahr ein Wettbewerb für Blasorchester und Brass Bands ausgerichtet. Die Komposition erhielt den Titel Musica Helvetica. Es handelt sich dabei um ein dreiteiliges Konzertwerk, dessen letzten zwei Teile direkt ineinander übergehen. Der erste Teil, Musica Prima, ist eine virtuose, flotte Eröffnung mit eingestreuten jazzigen Einflüssen. Einen Kontrast hierzu bildet der folgende Teil, Musica Sacra, worin das Hauptthema wunderschönausgearbeitet wird - die Instrumentierung ist hier außergewöhnlich farbig. Der letzte Teil, Musica Alpina, ist inspiriert vom abwechslungsreichen Landschaftsbild der Schweiz. Mit seiner launigen Struktur bildet er einen würdigen Abschluss dieses schönen Triptychons. Chaque année, un concours pour orchestres d’harmonie et brass bands se déroule Wallberg, en Suisse. Outre un hymne et une oeuvre avec solo, tous les orchestres doivent interpréter une pièce imposée. Jan de Haan fut chargé de composer celle-ci pour l’édition 2012 du concours.
