Music Minus One Trumpet-This volume 3 of the Signature Series will lean towards a jazzier concept than the previous volumes and to set that tone I chose Lullaby of Birdland as the first song! And who better to place in that #1 position than Mel Torme as the singer associated with George Shearing's jazz classic! I had the pleasure of playing with the Velvet Fog in a very memorable jazzy setting. It was in the 1960s and Mel did a two week engagement at NYC's Basin Street East with the Marty Paich Dektette Band. Let's go forward to the 21st century to my play-along version and a few guidelines on how to approach it. There are actually three approaches. First as the trumpet soloist then playing the unisonline with the horns and finally as a lead player on top of the little big band. Our next song When I Fall in Love was one of Nat Cole's many huge hits. It's a song I play often on my jazz gigs. Notice that I hug the melody only adding ornaments here and there and a modest amount of embellishments. This jazz classic adapts perfectly for young players. The tempo is moderate and the swing figures are easy to play. The blues form makes it easy for inexperienced improvisers and sample solos are included for alto tenor trumpet and piano.

Written for and recorded by the U.S. Air Force Airmen of Note Joe Jackson director John Wasson has created a stunning and unique setting of this long-standing jazz classic. The chart is filled with twists and turns blazingensemble passages and also features solo space for two alto saxes (optional alto sax and trumpet). For the mature band here is a real showstopper.

The music featured in this folio part of a continuing series of books covering the music of the legendary trumpet player/composer consists of original Davis compositions from three different periods. Miles was signed to the Prestige label in the '50s and many of the recordings he made for that label were recorded after Miles had already signed a contract with Columbia Records. There were a number of marathon sessions made to finish out the Prestige agreement. Most of the resulting recordings are regarded as classics today and such tunes as 'Green Haze' and 'Tune Up' are favorites among jazz musicians young and old. Davis' Columbia recordings of 1958-59are prized for the excellence of the material the solos of Cannonball Adderley John Coltrane Wynton Kelly and Bill Evans and the beauty of the recording quality. Kind of Blue included such gems as 'Blue in Green' 'So What' and 'Freddie Freeloader'. Not only is Kind of Blue one of the best-selling albums of all time it kick-started the new jazz shich stressed modes and scales rather than chords. Miles led another legendary quartet in the early '60s with Wayne Shorter Herbie Hancock Ron Carter and Tony Williams. 'Circle' and 'Agitation' became part of the group's active repertoire. The level of soling was consistently excellent and the quartet's appearances at clubs and concert halls were usually sold out.
