This edition of the 28 variations on the aria Ich schlief, da traumte mir for flute and bassa continuo by Johann Joachim Quantz, published here for the first time, is based on a manuscript in the Preussischen Staatsbibliothek in Berlin, whose title reads: Solo Traverso cole Basso Achtundzwantzig Variation es uber die Arie Ich schlief da traumte mir del Sigr: Qvanz The high degree which the art of flute playing had reached at that time is very clearly displayed in this set of variations, a form unusual in Quantz's output. For this reason, this work is very suitable as a study as weil as for performance. The realization of the figured bass and the indications of phrasing merely represent one of many possibilities, and are only intended as suggestions. Am Beginn der Sonate steht in der Partitur: Sonata a 3 di Quantz / Flauto / Travers: / Cembalo / o / Violino / Basso. Besondere Beachtung verdient dabei der Vermerk 'Cembalo o Violine', der besagt, dass das Werk in verschiedenen Besetzungen musiziert werden kann: als Sonate fur Flote und obligates Cembalo (eine uberaus reizvolle, bei Quantz nur selten anzutreffende Besetzung), oder als Trio fur Flote, Violine und Basso continuo.

Despite the many flute pieces that he composed, Quantz deemed worthy of publication only his six Sonatas for flute and basso continuo op. 1, and the present Six Duets op. 2, which was issued in 1759. What makes them particularly impressive is, above all, the melodic substance of these works. Advanced students will find a musically and technically rewarding collection which is ideal for ensemble playing and harmonic ear training through the interplay of the two flutes. The present edition is based on the original print. The many suspensions and grace notes were resolved exactly as Quantz himself described in his flute method Versuch einer Anweisung die Flote traversiere zu spielen.
