Die Notenbüchlein, die Johann Sebastian Bach für Mitglieder seiner Familie anlegte, sind für uns deshalb so wertvoll, weil sich hier Kunst und Leben spürbar durchdringen. Bach hat für seine zweite Frau Anna Magdalena zwei Notenbücher angelegt. Das erste 1722 ist nur fragmentarisch erhalten, das zweite entstand 1725. Von Bachs eigener Hand enthält das Notenbüchlein zu Beginn zwei große Partiten, die wohl als Widmungseintrag für seine Frau gedacht waren. Die Auswahl der übrigen Stücke stammt wahrscheinlich von Anna Magdalena selbst, deren Schrift im Notenbüchlein überwiegt. Aber auch kindlich Unbeholfenes ist zu sehen, so etwa in der Aria von der „Tabakspfeife“, die die Handschrift des ältesten Sohnes von Anna Magdalena, Gottfried Heinrich Bach, zeigt. So „führt uns das Klavierbüchlein mit seinem farbigen Nebeneinander von Ernst und Heiterkeit, von Zufall und tieferem Sinn lebendig in die Alltagswelt des Thomaskantors ein“ (Georg von Dadelsen). Die farblich getreue Nachbildung macht das Notenbüchlein als Faksimile allen Liebhabern der Bachschen Musik zugänglich.
