Haydn composed his Symphony no. 76 at the same time as his Symphonies nos. 77 and 78 for a planned trip to England that never took place. Nonetheless, H. C. Robbins Landon calls these works the English symphonies as they arestylistically closely linked to the London Bach , Johann Christian Bach. Haydn himself, in a letter of 1783 to his Parisian publisher Charles-Georges Boyer, described the symphonies as Leicht und nicht vil Concertirend , meaningthat they were light in spirit and did not contain extensive solo passages but rather a clear sense of classical form. Continuing the cooperation between Bärenreiter and the G. Henle publisher regarding Haydn s large-scalechoral works, operas and symphonies, this edition is based on the G. Henle Complete Edition of the Works of Joseph Haydn . The Bärenreiter catalogue now includes the complete performance material for several Sturm und Drang symphonies as well as all the London and Paris symphonies.

(Thomas Enselein).

Joseph Haydn's so-called Paris Symphonies were composed in 1785 and 1786 for the masonic lodge “Société Olympique†in Paris, which ran a large orchestra and organised regular concerts. These six works are notable for their artful motivic work and playful wit. Haydn here pays tribute both to the discerning taste of the Paris audience and to the excellent abilities of the musicians in the orchestra. These symphonies rapidly became famous and popular throughout Europe, thanks to editions published variously in Paris, Vienna and London. This E-flat major Symphony, composed in 1786, is notable for its colourful use of the woodwind, which are also allowed to come to the fore in solo passages. This study edition reproduces the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, which isa guarantor of the finest scholarship. An informative preface and a brief critical report make this handy score an ideal companion for all Haydn fans, both present and future.

Johann Joseph Rosler (1771-1812) was a composer, conductor and pianist who was active in Prague and Vienna. Later he was in the service of Prince Franz Joseph von Lobkowitz. His Piano Concerto No. 2 in E-flat major of 1803 is a fitting companion to the piano concertos of Beethoven; indeed, his first Piano Concerto in D major was mistakenly attributed to Beethoven until 1925.Now Rosler's second Piano Concerto is appearing in print for the first time. This is due to editor Alena Honigova discovering and identifying an autograph score which is the only preserved source in the Prague Conservatory archive. In this Urtext edition Honigova takes into account the distinctive features of Rosler's handwriting and the division of parts in the score, as befits the performance practice of his day.
