The song was written in 2003, after the composer-s spells of work with Tom Bogdan. The piece is dedicated to him and to Meredith Monk, in whose ensemble Tom Bogdan regularly appears; as a performer he has also taken part in several works by Monk. The song begins in passacaglia form, as a kind of quest for an answer, seeking the perfect solution. In the light of the failure of this to come about, the second part explains the futility of the search. First performance: March 2003.

“The Young Wives' Song, written in 1925 by Attila Jozsef (1905-1937) is a poem I found accidentally in the summer of 2010. It struck me on reading it that it can have two different meanings: a positive and a tragic resonance. By employing different singing techniques, I compiled and set to music the lines of verse, so that sometimes one meaning, sometimes the other comes to the fore. I was just 20 when I wrote the piece, just as Attila Jozsef was when he wrote the poem.†–Mate Balogh. The full duration of the song is approximately 5 minutes. It was premiered by Boglárka Terray on 2 October 2010, in Budapest. Hungarian Text.

The four choral settings in this edition from Jean Sibelius's Op. 18, in the original six settings for male choir, were arranged for mixed choir by Sibelius himself. While Sortunut aani Op. 18,1 and Saarella palaa Op. 18,4 were first published in this version in a choral collection in 1898, Venematka Op. 18,3 was only arranged by Sibelius in 1904 for a summer class and Sydameni laulu Op. 18,6 another ten years later as a reaction to an unauthorized arrangement. In the long and changeful history of the collection Op. 18, its contents were extended, revised and repositioned many times. The four current settings are all those that are also present in the final version of Op. 18 for male choir and of which there are original arrangements. The texts for Sortunut aani (The Broken Voice), Venematka (Boat Trip) and Saarella palaa (Fire on the Island) stem from the Finnish national epics Kalevala and Kanteletar, while the text of Sydameni laulu (Song of My Heart) stems from the poet Aleksis Kivi, but refers to the Kalevala, too. The edition includes translations of the texts in German and English as well as an informative preface that is based on the complete edition Jean Sibelius Works, just like the score.

Chor zu dritt with its three-part settings is aimed at the large number of choirs which cannot do full justice to the mainly four-part choral literature with divoded male voices. In Vol. 5, O little Town of Bethlehem, the singers can look forward to many national and international Advent songs and Christmas carols - and to successful concerts in the Christmas season, even with only one male voice!

Jean Sibelius's Six Songs for Male Choir Op. 18 are published as Urtext with the original Finnish lyrics for the first time in this edition. Most of these stem from the Finnish national epics Kalevala and Kanteletar, but the texts of Sydameni laulu [Song of My Heart] and Metsamiehen laulu [Song of the Woodmen] are from the poet Aleksis Kivi. The individual pieces originated over a couple of years for different choirs and occasions and were only later combined by Sibelius under a common Opus number. Venematka [Boat Trip] originated as early as 1893, Saarellaa palaa [Fire on the Island] was first performed in 1895 and Sortunut aani [The Broken Voice] in 1899. Sydameni laulu was published in the same year together with Metsamiehen laulu, while Terve kuu [Greetings to the Moon] was not composed by Sibelius until 1901. The contents of the collection Op. 18 were subsequently extended, revised and repositioned by Sibelius many times; the final shape with six settings was established in 1930. Four of these settings were also arranged for mixed choir and have already been published as an Urtext edition (CHB 5372). The edition includes translations of the lyrics in German and English as well as an informative preface that is based on volume VII/2 of the complete edition Jean Sibelius Works, just like the score.

We owe it to Paul Hindemith's interest in education, which, in turn, was owed not only to the professional musicians and composers, that he composed for children and amateur musicians as well. Dame Music stands for this dialogue to make contemporary music for amateurs accessible not only in theory but also in practice. Dame Music was composed during his stay in the USA after he had been asked for an American edition of his composition Frau Musica. Musik zum Singen und Spielen auf Instrumenten nach einem Text von Luther, Op. 45 No. 1 from 1928. In 1942 he wrote the successful American version Dame Music for which Hindemith also revised some instrumental parts. The vocal setting was adopted without any changes and its text translated into English. With great success: Within just a few years, Dame Music had been included in the repertoire of amateur musicians in the United States.
