Aus der Kantate 140 'Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme'Johann Sebastian Bach schrieb in seinem musikalisch überaus produktiven Leben unzählige Kantaten. Diese Kantate, deren Text vom Gleichnis der klugen und der törichten Jungfrauen handelt, schrieb er zum ersten Adventssonntag. Philip Sparke bearbeitete daraus den vierten Satz, in welchem sich Bachs Kontrapunkt von seiner elegantesten Seite zeigt, für Blasorchester. Das Stück besteht aus nur drei melodischen Linien, ist aber gerade in seiner Schlichtheit wunderschön.
