The collection of the main solo songs by Armas Jarnefelt was accelerated by a donation made by his son, Arvi, in Stockholm to the University of Helsinki: dozens of previously unpublished manuscripts thus found their way home to Finland. Sweden was father Jarnefelt's second home, since he spent a couple of decades as conductor of the Royal Opera in Stockholm. He concentrated almost exclusively on solo songs, the reason no doubt being that his father-in-law was Jean Sibelius, a master of large-scale form. Jarnefelt's vocal lyrics spring from the National-Romantic ethos nurtured on the archaic rune-singing of the national epic, the Kalevala, and the distant lands of Karelia. The folk-like elements of his youthful songs were in time joined by Impressionistic and in places even Expressionistic timbres. This collection is edited by Matti Tuloisela. Melartin was also a prolific writer of songs of rare stylistic diversity, ranging from lyrical, nature-inspired mood pictures to impressionistic and at times even highly expressionistic pieces. His choice of texts reflects his broad education, for he was equally at home in both Finnish and foreign poetry. The selected songs by Melartin (edited by Matti Tuloisela) are in two volumes. Volume 2 examines his vocal output from a broader stylistic and linguistic perspective. This volume also contains a number of rarer songs in languages other than Finnish with Finnish translations. Robert Kajanus (1856-1933) was a highly influential Finnish conductor and composer. He studied in Helsinki and Germany, established the Helsinki Orchestra Society (later Helsinki Philharmonic) and its orchestra school, and was the orchestra's chief conductor for over 50 years. Kajanus is often regarded only as a conductor, but he was indeed a skilled composer whose music is largely unknown. This Urtext volume, edited by Sebastian Silen, contains all of Kajanus's works for violin -- his own instrument. A collection of solo songs by Einari Marvia (1915-97) edited by Matti Tuloisela. As many as 11 songs are here published for the first time. Einari Marvia contributed about a hundred solo songs to the Finnish Lied tradition established by Yrjo Kilpinen but drew his musical influences more from his teacher, Erkki Melartin, than from Kilpinen. Marvia turned for inspiration to ancient Finnish folk poetry and the nature lyrics of Finnish poets. His songs are characterised by rich musical, melodic invention enhanced by colourful, distinctive harmonies. The texts are taken from a number of sources, which proves that he read widely and was familiar with poetry. Taneli Kuusisto (1905-88) was a versatile influence in Finnish musical life: composer, pianist, organist, church musician, writer on music, and Rector of the Sibelius Academy. Of the more than 120 solo songs penned by him, Suomalainen rukous (A Finnish Prayer), a setting of a poem by Uuno Kailas composed in 1939 on the eve of the Winter War, has acquired a status all of its own. The solo songs of Taneli Kuusisto are published in two volumes edited by Ismo Lahdetie. The second Kuusisto album for voice and piano includes 28 folk song arrangements with Finnish textsand some of them have a German translation. Heininen wrote four works between 1986 and 1990 which together explore in an unprecedented way a palette of technical and expressive possibilities of male voices ranging from harmonic densities to spatial hocketing. Op. 56a opens on a tranquil and lyrical note with four lullabies subtitled 'For myself', 'For everyone', 'For the children' and 'For the cat'.
