Robert Saxton 's Hortus Musicae , Book 1 was commissioned by Ian Richie for the 2013 City of London Festival with funds provided by the John S. Cohen Foundation. The first performance was given by Clare Hammond on June 24th 2013 at the church of St Mary Le Bow. The title, less 'literal' in Latin than in the vernacular, refers to the idea of an allegorical/metaphysical garden (reference to a 'real', or existing, garden might be implied by Hortus Musicus) with various facets. The titles of the individual pieces/movements, with their respective garden image, are as follows: 1) Hortus Somniorum: a fleeting vision of a 'magical' garden 2) Hortus Temporis: a reflection of/on the floralclock described by Andrew Marvell (1621-1678) in his [metaphysical] poem The Garden: How well the skilful gardener drew Of flowers and herbs this dial new Where from above the milder sun Does through a fragrant zodiac run; And, as it works, the industrious bee Computes its time as well as we. How could such sweet and wholesome hours Be reckoned but with herbs and flowers! 3) Hortus Cantus: A garden in which nature 'sings' (praises), in the manner of a 'chorale prelude' and ending with the cantus firmus transformed into bells. 4) Hortus Infinitatis: A meditative/formal garden representing Time suspended, in the form of a palindromic prolation canon combined with a harmonic ground (chaconne). 5) Saltatio Hortensis: A (summer) garden of dancing, celebratory nature. Its essence (and that of the entire cycle, both metaphorically and structurally/formally) is summed up in words spoken by Miranda in WH Auden's 1944 Tempest [Shakespeare]-inspired poem The Sea And The Mirror; So, to remember our changing garden, we Are linked as children in a circle dancing. Duration: 15 minutes.

This Missa in G minor is the only surviving work in this genre by Johann Hugo von Wilderer; his output as Kapellmeister at the Electoral Palatinate court, which resided in Mannheim from 1720 onwards, was mainly devoted to opera. The three-part Kyrie, the through-composed Gloria, and the partly obbligato instrumental writing show the influence of the early Neapolitan mass style. The music-historic significance of the Missa is firstly that it is an important example of the church music performed around 1700 at the Electoral Palatinate court, but above all that Bach evidently used it as a source of inspiration for the Kyrie of the Mass in B minor, as shown, for example in the form of the Adagio introduction of the Kyrie I in both works.

Rolf Rudin has made a name for himself as an award-winning composer far beyond the borders of Germany. Among the large number of his sacred choral compositions is also the church music setting of 'Ave Maria'. It has been published both in a version for mixed choir and in a version for three- or four-part women's choir (SSA or SSAA) and can be performed either a cappella or with piano accompaniment. The three-minute musical Latin prayer in honour of the Virgin Mary is ideal for church services. It is filled with catchy sumptuous harmonies and a tender depth of feeling which is supported instrumentally by the softly swaying ad libitum piano accompaniment.

Herrmann Schroeder (1904-1984), one of the most important church music composers of the 20th century, wrote this Latin mass in 1961, i.e. at the beginning of the Second Vatican Council. The Council marked a turning point in the field of church music: Masses in the respective native languages gained more and more acceptance, Gregorian chant faded into the background, stylistic features of popular music were also taken up in church music. Today, about 50 years after the beginning of the Council, one can see a return to Gregorian chant and polyphonic vocal music, and this is why even works such as Schroeder's Latin Missa melismatica arouse great interest again. The work takes the free intonation of the Gregorian chant as a starting-point and is enriched with wide-spun melodic arcs in elaborate polyphony, according to Schroeder's opinion that Gregorian chant and polyphony are particularly suitable for giving expression to the mysticism and irrationality of religious faith in the liturgy. A demanding work for good choirs, duration ca. 16 minutes.

Vocal music, especially church music, has always played an important role in the oeuvre of the extremely versatile composer Sándor Szokolay (1931-2013). He left behind four complete mass settings among these Missa Pannonica , written for six-part mixed choir, was composed in 1987 for the Tomkins Vocal Ensemble conducted by János Dobra. János Malina praised the nearly half-hour, large-scale and virtuosic work as follows: The mass is an outstanding achievement within Szokolay's sacred music oeuvre. It is a composition with extremely rich musical contents, and it is impressively spontaneous and powerful, combining a broad range of styles, traditions, and influences in a veryoriginal way..

At less than 20 years of age, the youngest son of the Leipzig cantor of St. Thomas, Johann Sebastian Bach, withdrew from the Lutheran musical tradition of his family: Johann Christian Bach went to Italy, converted to Catholicism there and composed mainly Latin church music between 1757 and 1760. His great successes with operas for Turin, Milan and Naples from 1761 onwards led him all the way to London. Bach's church music comprises a number of vespers compositions, some of them large-scale, including this Magnificat a 4 (1760) for soloists, choir and orchestra. The very diversified work gets its additional attraction from distinctively led oboes and horns.
