The Third Symphony occupies an special place in the evolutionary process of Szymanowskis style. The Symphony The Song of the Night, Op. 27, is a setting of the poem of the same title, from the second divan of Mawlana Jalal-ad-din Rumi, for tenor solo, mixed choir and orchestra. It was completed in the summer 1916. Szymanowskis interest in oriental music at this period is not so much , as far as the Third Symphony is concerned, an attempt at some formal stylisation of eastern music, but rather an indication of his search for some mode of expression which would best reflect the conflicts of his aesthetic and artistic ideas. It was the direct contact made with the art of the Grecian and Arabic worlds during his travel to Sicily and North Africa in 1911 and 1914 that provided the external stimulus for this interest. The Third Symphony can be classed with those symphonies for chorus and solo voices so often favoured by the neo-romantic and expressionist composers. It is written in a free ternary form, the thematic material being the basic unifying structural element, which imparts a conciseness to the form, and retaining the function despite the significant changes that occur in the melodic character of the music. The texture is polymelodic, and a score reveals a masterly interweaving of the multiplicity of parts, melodic lines and patterns of sound. This symphony is consummation of all Szymanowskis mastery in instrumentation and colour, and a superb study of orchestral polyphony. Here, Szymanowski liberates himself from the rigid relations of the functional harmonic system. In the place of tonal progressions, he shifts chromatically from one sound lane to another, of which the smallest units are chords made up of tritones and seconds, using only a free intervallic structure, far more remote in Szymanowski from the dominant centralistic harmony then Debussy. In style, the Third Symphony belongs to the neo-romantic period, if this can be broadly defined as including modernistic and expressionistic trends, and to musical impressionism. Intermezzi from the opera Under Himlen was composed by Bent Sorensen in 2003. Scored for 2 Mezzosoparanos and Orchestra. Text by Peter Asmussen. Programme Note: In March 2003, when the Royal Theatre premiered the composer Bent Sorensen's and the dramatist Peter Asmussen's opera Under the Sky, it was not only Bent Sorensen's first opera on the large scale, but also his first work as a music dramatist at all. The challenge of composing an opera came from the general manager of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra/DR, Per Erik Veng, who had asked Asmussen in 1996 whether he would write the libretto for an opera and pick out a composer to work with on it. Asmussen was willing, and he pointed to Bent Sorensen as the composer. Bent Sorensen reacted positively to Per Erik Veng's suggestion of an opera collaboration with Asmussen, and with the opera agreement settled, the Danish National Symphony Orchestra/DR was then offered an independent work. It is related to the opera, but sheds light on it from a different angle - Bent Sorensen himself compares it to a film 'trailer'. The result is Intermezzi, a suite in five movements. Intermezzi is expressly not just a garland of selected episodes from the opera, but an independent work built up in one long symmetrical sequence with instrumental passages in the middle of the first, third and fifth movements as well as the purely instrumental second and fourth movements, as the bearing pillars of the work. Fragments of the story of Ida and Molte (both mezzo-sopranos) are told, but they do not happen in the same order or with the same conclusion as in the opera. In this way Intermezzi becomes a comment on how not everything in the past is necessarily what it seems, or what one at first makes of it. In the first movement Ida sings to Magius that she is carrying Molte's child, while from afar Molte observes the idyllic world from the outside. The second movement is instrumental, while the third begins with Ida's love aria, which merges into a great instrumental passage before the movement ends with Molte's cynical remark that Ida is simply a fairytale, a book one closes. After a brief instrumental fourth movement comes the fifth, where Molte laments his coldness and isolation amidst all the riches, and seduces Ida by urging her to liberate him with her warmth. The Full Score for Peter Maxwell Davies' fourth in a series of ten string quartets commissioned by the Naxos Recording company, first performed by the Maggini Quartet on 20th August 2004 at the Chapel of the Royal Palace, Oslo, Norway, as part of the Olso Chamber Music Festival. Composer Note: The fourth Naxos quartet was written in January and February of 2004, with the intention of producing something lighter and much less fierce than its predecessor, an unpremeditated and spontaneous reaction to the illegal invasion of Iraq. I returned to the well-known Brueghel picture of children's games (1560, now in Vienna), which had been the inspiration for my sixth Strathclyde Concerto, for flute and orchestra. These illustrations liberated my musical imagination, but I feel it would limit the listener's perception to be too specific about which game relates to exactly which section of the work. Suffice it to say that there is vigorous play - leap-frog, bind the devil with a cord, truss, wrestling - alongside quieter pastimes - masks, guess whom I shall choose, courting, odds and evens. The single movement juxtaposes these activities as abruptly and intimately as they occur in Brueghel. Rather as the eye is taken into different perspectives and proportions of scale within the picture, taking liberties which would never be present in, for instance, Brunelleschi architectural drawings, so here, with a constant sequence of transformation processes, I have distorted the neat, precise implications of modal progression, expressed in the unison opening phrase (from F to B through A sharp/B flat), so that the ear is led, en route, into the sound equivalents of strange passageways and closed rooms: sicut exposition ludus. As work on the quartet progressed I became aware that I was reading into, and behind the games, adult motives and implications, concerning aggression and war, with their consequences. It was impossible to escape into innocent childhood fantasy. The nature of the F to B progression underlying the whole construction derives from a passage in the development of the first movement of Mahler's Third Symphony, and the opening of Schoenberg's Second String Quartet. However, unlike in these models, here a real - if temporary - sense of resolution occurs at the close of the quartet: as when the curtain falls on the reconciled Count and Countess in 'Figaro' one wonders how long the F/B truce will hold, and games break out again. The quartet is dedicated to Giuseppe Rebecchini, Roman architect, and friend since the nineteen-fifties.

Stratifications was composed by Hans Abrahamsen in 1973-75 and was premiered in the summer 1977 by the Iceland Symphony Orchestra at the Young Nordic Music Festival in Reykjavik. Programme note: The stratifications referred to in the title unfold two different levels. There is the stratification of the time dimension produced by the opposition of contrasting parts, at the same time the polyphony, the presence of several simultaneously sounding layers, is of great importance to the music. By garish colours and clear-cut outlines a polyrhythmic simultaneousness of simple melodies is produced with more gestic music and other material which give a peculiar set piece-like effect inthe sound picture. The new simplicity details are here woven together in a new kind of complex whole. Stratifications begins with a series of concretistic masklike pictures of the music. It is like seeing lantern slides. But this fictive form crackles and the music gets attentive and real. The music is in a night-mare condition, where it is not getting anywhere in spite of a great dynamic display. But finally is liberating itself and rising in triumph.
