A Little Klezmer Suite was commissioned by Rushton Park High School to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their band programme. They gave the premiere in a virtual online concert in October 2020. Klezmer music originated inthe ‘shtetl’ (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe, where itinerant Jewish troubadours, known as ‘klezmorim’, had performed at celebrations, particularly weddings, since the early Middle Ages. 'Klezmer' is a Yiddish termcombining the Hebrew words ‘kley’ (instrument) and ‘zemer’ (song). The roots of the style are found in secular melodies, popular dances, Jewish ‘hazanut’ (cantorial music) and also the ‘nigunim’, the wordless melodies intoned bythe ‘Hasidim’ (orthodox Jews). The melodies used in the four movements of A Little Klezmer Suite have traditionally been used in Jewish wedding ceremonies and celebrations.

A Little Klezmer Suite werd geschreven in opdracht van de Rushton Park High School ter gelegenheid van het vijftigjarig bestaan van het blaasorkest van de school. De première vond in oktober 2020 plaats tijdens een virtueelonlineconcert. Klezmermuziek is ontstaan in de 'sjtetls' (dorpen) en getto’s van Oost-Europa, waar rondreizende Joodse troubadours, de zogeheten klezmorim, sinds de vroege middeleeuwen optraden bij feesten, met name bruiloften.Klezmer is een Jiddische term waarin de Hebreeuwse woorden 'kley' (instrument) en 'zemer' (lied) zijn gecombineerd. De oorsprong van de stijl is te vinden in wereldlijke melodieën, populaire dansen, de chazanoet muziek uit desynagoge met een voorzanger en de nigunim, de tekstloze melodieën die worden gezongen door de orthodoxe chassidische joden. De melodieën die in de vier delen van A Little Klezmer Suite zijn gebruikt, werden vanoorsprong ten gehore gebracht op Joodse bruiloftsplechtigheden en huwelijksfeesten.

'Stucke fur die Jugend' intends to carefully introduce the piano pupils to new music. At the time that the piano pieces were created in 1927, Joseph Haas sat on the jury at the Donaueschingen Music Festival together with Paul Hindemith. In his typical manner, the pieces looked forward to the future without burning bridges to the past. The stylistic elements to be mentioned in particular are the sparing use of harmonies which give special emphasis to the linear, the staccato, the arpeggios, and the frequently used progressions of fourths. The influence of his teacher Max Reger can be noticed as well from time to time.The rhythmic energies running through the pieces are of great appeal and educational value.This new edition combines the pieces originally published in two volumes in one volume.

This work was written in 2005, prompted by the composer's determination that young members of junior, music school and conservatoire wind ensembles should not be limited to transcriptions for lack of original compositions, especially contemporary ones. The new devices used in the Little Suite are suitable for student players to try out. Indeed, they enjoy them - for instance, purring or whistling into the instrument. Each of the three-or-four-minute movements of this four-movement work can also be performed separately. The titles of the movements are the following: 1. In cheerful mood, 2. Song, 3. Joke, 4. March. This music in modern idiom, full ofinteresting new effects, offers young players an opportunity for enjoyable music-making together, and at the same time prepares them for playing more difficult contemporary works.

Dieses Werk schrieb der Komponist 2005, für Jugendblasorchester. Jeder der vier Sätze dieser Komposition lässt sich auch einzeln vortragen. Die Titel der Sätze sind: 1. Gutgelaunt, 2. Lied, 3. Spass, 4. Marsch. Die in moderner Sprache gehaltene, mit vielen interessanten neuen Effekten bereicherte Musik bietet den jungen Instrumentalisten Möglichkeiten zum heiteren, gutgelaunten Musizieren in der Gemeinschaft und bereitet sie auch auf das Spielen schwierigerer zeitgenössischer Musik vor.

Little Suite (In Cheerful Mood, Song, Joke, March) pour musiciens décomplexés s’adresse aux Orchestres Juniors de niveau avancé, ainsi qu’aux formations la recherche de nouvelles expériences musicales. Il va falloir, siffl er, souffl er, ronronner, etc. Chacun des quatre mouvements (durée individuelle : 3-4 min.) peut être interprété séparément.

Little Suite si presta per essere eseguito da banda di livello avanzato come anche per tutte le formazioni desiderose di suonare un brano originale moderno con effetti sorprendenti. I quattro movimenti di questa piccola suite, In Cheerful Mood, Song, Joke e March, possono essere eseguiti separatamente.

The first impulse to compose these 3 Little Suites for Guitar came from the desire to offer very young students compositions not framed by the usual features of â??music for childrenâ?? but, rather, meant to introduce into their musical horizon sonorities, rhythms, and expressive modalities not generally experienced in the more â??traditionalâ?? courses of study.
As the compositions developed, the project underwent some slight modifications, so that in the end one could say that the three suites became progressively more difficult, though remaining, in their deep essence, quite â??simpleâ??.
I would recommend paying careful attention to the titles of the pieces and to the expressive markings. Although it was not my intention to write â??descriptiveâ?? music, I have tried to handle these pieces like stage scripts, giving each a specific â??characterâ??. For this purpose my long experience as a composer of theatre music has been very helpful.
It would give me great satisfaction if guitarists of every age would enjoy performing these suites. I would like teachers to find in them cues for proposing to their pupils further refinements concerning both technique and expression, never forgetting how inexpressible music truly is.
