''Learning the piano is so widespread these days and good pianists so numerous that mediocrity on the instrument can no longer be accepted. In effect, the piano must be studied for eight or ten years before performance of a harder piece is attempted. Few can spare the years for this. It takes one hour to play the volume in full. The composer and conductor Oliver Knussen (1952 - 2018) was loved by many companions for his generosity and musical intellect. To Detlev Glanert, whose works he loved to perform, he was a friend and one of his 'personal heroes'. By his own admission, he learned attention to detail from 'Olly', with whom he worked at Tanglewood as early as 1986. If Glanert's Trumpet Concerto, composed in 2018, is the large-scale symphonic homage to his role model, the solo “Little Letter to Olly” does the same in a small format. Two elegiac adagio sections frame a boisterous presto with all kinds of virtuoso tricks. The 'Letter without Words' owes its existence to a suggestion by the cellist Anssi Karttunen, who asked for commemorative pieces for Knussen's 70th birthday from a number of composers and premiered them at the Aldeburgh Festival 2022.

'Caracolitos chicos from Alberto Grau (*1937) ist a virtuoso composition for women's choir belonging to a group of works that Grau wrote for ensembles who were looking for new aesthetic proposals. The text of Garcia Lorca that serves as a point of departure, is only a short selection of playful verses describing the natural and untamed character of a child that imitates a horse. This is why the composition combines different layers of polyrythmic textures in the singing parts of the choir with body percussion, which are fully interconnected and must be interpreted as a whole.The intention of the composer is that the piece turns into a festive and happier experience on stage.

This little concerto for clarinet was written for Peter Holligan , a friend of its composer, and the Fife Youth Concert Band (Scotland).

The work was based on traditional Celtic music, and consists of three movements.
1. Reel - a fast dance ending in an atmospheric but virtuoso cadenza.
2. Lament - a slow and melancholy song hinting at the sound of bagpipes.
3. A fast and virtuoso dance in 6/8 time with Irish influence.

The work is a wonderful audience-pleaser and an absolute 'must' for all clarinet-players.
The band too is called upon and by all means does have its part to play in the piece.

Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto op. 64, is a key work of the 19th century, adhering to the classical style of Beethoven while pointing the way to the romantic ethos of Brahms. It has long been known that Mendelssohn performed the work with three soloists in succession: Ferdinand David, who worked closely with the composer during its composition and played it at the premiere; the 'child prodigy' Joseph Joachim; and Hubert Leonard, a young Belgian virtuoso about whom little is known.

As proof sheets for the Violin Concerto in E minor were long considered lost, it could be described as somewhat of a sensation when proofs for the solo violin part resurfaced together with a letter from Mendelssohn to Leonard.

The letter informs us that the composer invited Leonard to his home in Frankfurt in order to make his acquaintance. It was already known that Mendelssohn had given proof sheets to David; now we know that he also gave some to Leonard.

The recently discovered proofs reveal how Leonard played the concerto with Mendelssohn on that memorable evening in February 1845. Besides containing bowing marks and fingering, they also show how Leonard executed shifts of position and where he employed open strings. Furthermore modifications made to dynamic markings and additional legato bowing are shown.

It is safe to assume that all of this was done with Mendelssohn's approval. That the young violinist made a positive impression on the composer is confirmed in the latter's correspondence following their joint performance. Mendelssohn is full of praise for Leonard's playing and offers to lend his support in finding employment in Germany.

This revised edition of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto (only the orchestral parts remain unchanged) includes a separate booklet on performance practice.
