Mendelssohn’s contemporaries frequently mentioned his “Hymn of Praise†in the same breath as Beethoven’s Ninth – and often enough viewed it as an imitation. Mendelssohn authority John Michael Cooper, in his extensive Introduction to this new Urtext edition, shows that the comparison is completely unfounded: with this work Mendelssohn created a new genre to which he gave the name “symphony-cantataâ€. Later he added a secular counterpart with “Die Erste Walpurgisnachtâ€.Drawing on all relevant sources, Cooper provides a detailed account of the genesis and structure of this monumental work. Rounding off his scholarly performing edition are notes on the work’s performance, e.g. tempo, articulation and dynamics. For the first time the piano reduction includes Mendelssohn’s authorised version of the “Sinfoniaâ€, based on the first edition of No. 1 for piano solo.

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy was commissioned by the city of Leipzig to write the Symphony Cantata Lobgesang for the 400th anniversary of the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg. The work was given its first performance in Leipzigs Thomaskirche on 25 June 1840. Another performance took place at the Birmingham Music Festival on 23 September 1840. The composer created a hybrid genre here, a formal designation that he took quite literally and which he used here for the first and only time: after the three symphonic movements have flowed one into the other attacca, comes the Lobgesang Cantata in several sections Alles, was Odem hat. The present Urtext edition is the first to take into account the parts which were written for the first performances in Leipzig and which help clear up a number of discrepant readings.,,Der Herausgeber hat sich die Muhe gemacht, die 1841 im selben Verlag erstveroffentlichte Partitur mit dem Erstdruck der Stimmen zu vergleichen und konnte mit im Stimmensatz gefundenen Angaben zur Artikulation, Dynamik etc. die neue Partitur enorm bereichern. (Hans Gebhard, Chor und Konzert )The Urtext edition of the Lobgesang Symphony is the first to take into account the parts which were written for the first performances in Leipzig and which help clear up a number of discrepant readings.

Mendelssohn described his 1840 work “Lobgesang†as “a symphony for chorus and orchestraâ€. It is now firmly established in the standard repertoire of the major oratorio choirs. For many choirs, Lobgesang remains on their wishlist of works they want to sing. But what can be done if the choir is to small, the budget is limited, and the performance space is tight? Here, the experienced arranger and orchestral musician Joachim Linckelmann offers an excellent tried-and-tested solution. In his arrangement for soloists, chorus, and chamber orchestra, he has reduced the wind instruments from the original 17 to just 7 single instruments. The string parts remain largely identical to the original, but can also be played by smaller numbers. And the vocal parts (soloists and choir) remain unaltered in this arrangement, so that they can be sung from the piano reductions and choral scores of the Carus Urtext edition.•,Major work which can now be performed by smaller choirs•,Wind and brass parts of the original version reduced to seven single instruments•,Vocal scores and choral scores from the original version can be used•,carus plus: the work (original version) is available in carus music, the Choir Coach, and in the Carus Choir Coach series (audio only). Score available separately - see item CA.4007600.

Mendelssohn describes to his friend Klingemann the 1840 work as a 'symphony for chorus and orchestra'... First three symphonic movements, to which 12 choral- and solo- movements are appendaged; the words from the Psalms, and indeed all pieces, vocal and instrumental, are composed in the words 'Everything which has breath, Praise the Lord'; one understands by this that first the instruments give praise in their own way, and then the chorus and the individual voices. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Score available separately - see item CA.4007600.
