All are accessible to learn and offer choirs a new slant on contemporary choral music at its very best.  'Choral music has always been at the emotional core of my musical output. Even when I?m writing large-scale orchestral works (or indeed chamber music) I alwaysfind myself returning to techniques and textures I?ve greedily stolen from centuries of music from Tye to Howells early and recent. I try to design my own choral music primarily for use in worship where the measure of the success of the piece is if it helps guide the listeners? ears upwards and elsewhere as sacred architecture and the various rituals of the church themselves are meant to do. The specificity of music heard only in certain seasons is for me an important and thrilling element of the choral tradition: a Beethoven Symphony is welcome at any point in the year but an anthem for Candlemas works only then at a certain time of day and on a certain day of the year. With this functional spirit at the heart of the compositional process I hope that the music collected here makes equal sense in a concert setting. This beautiful piece by Tobin Stokes is loosely based on the five stages of grieving by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross. The first section of the music set for 6-part treble choir on the text ?Hear my prayer Oh Lord ?is polyphonic at a subdued dynamic level. The second phrase of the verse ?and let my crying come unto thee ? is homophonic and builds to a full climax before diminishing to a very soft and passionate ending.

This setting of the opening to Psalm 102 was composed in the early 1680s. Purcell who was in his early twenties had succeeded John Blow as organist of Westminster Abbey around the beginning of the decade and his star was in the ascendant as a court composer.In this piece he pulls off a remarkable compositional coup: a single gradual climax lasting over two minutes and culminating on the final repetition of the word 'come' is achieved through a sublime freely developing eight-part weave of the opening material. The harmonies that result from the chromatic inflections on the word 'crying' all serve the mounting tension in this extraordinary miniature.Studyof the autograph manuscript suggest that this anthem was intended to be the opening part of a larger work which was never completed.
