I Love Thee, I Love Thee

Love me sweet was composed for the occasion of the composer's wedding in July 2010. The text consists of four verses taken from Elizabeth Barrett Browning's ironic poem A Man's Requirements which ends with the couplet, 'I will love thee - half a year - As a man is able.' This setting responds to the purer sentiments of the earlier verses, employing a lilting metre, a harmonic idiom and a piquant sprinkling of dissonance. Tom Wiggall is a London-based composer writing mainly for voice, stage and screen. Elizabeth Barrett Browning's well-loved poem sings beautifully in this setting for mixed voices. Unison blooms to four-part writing throughout and the text is painted with a soaring melody while rich contemporary harmonies reflect the mood and message of the text. Gorgeous for younger as well as older choirs with an exquisite piano accompaniment.

This anthem was composed for the service of thanksgiving for a Civil Partnership in June 2011. In looking for a suitable text the composer turned to Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806–61) one of whose sonnets he had used for another wedding anthem (Love is beautiful indeed) a few years earlier. As the title suggests this highly expressive text puts into words the intense feeling of love and the mostly homophonic music reflects that through luscious harmonies and beautifully shaped phrases. Suitable for intermediate choirs this setting of a popular wedding text is a joy for both performers and audience.
