The Magnificat for 6 voices and basso continuo is the small sister of the Magnificat from the so-called Marian Vespers (Vespers 1610). Monteverdi published it in 1610 together with the larger work which included obbligato instruments - a real alternative for Vesper services and performances where only an organ is available. Score available separately - see item CA.2720500.

In many performances of Monteverdi's magnificent Vespers of the Blessed Virgin the Lauda Jerusalem and the Magnificat movements, which lie in a high tessitura, are transposed downwards. So that these can also be performed with the highly-acclaimed Carus edition, we offer both these movements individually a fourth lower. Vocal score, chorus score, and parts for this are also all available separately. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2780100.

The four-part Magnificat presented in this edition is an alternatim setting - i.e. polyphony alternating with plainsong - and as such represents the conservative side of Monteverdi's output. Score available separately - see item CA.4043800.
