Mary Our Mother

Commissioned for Tenebrae and their director Nigel Short. John Tavener writes:'Mother and Child celebrates the miracle of childbirth. It also celebrates Mary in her universal aspect as mother of all Prophets andco-redemptress with Christ. But behind all this is the Theophanic Light single and infinite and the same in every Religious tradition. The music is at once tender ecstatic and luminous and follows the text. I have interpolatedinto Brian Keeble’s poem texts celebrating the Eternal feminine in Greek and then at the climax an outburst in Sanskrit of ATMA. This is supreme Reality the true Self shining and infinite the one single God expressedin music by pulsating awesome strokes on the Hindu Temple Gong with organ and choir in massive blocks. This seems to say that the real ‘Mother and Child’ are both beyond birth and beyond death and beyond time.'

In Praise of Mary is a cantata in six short movements written for the 1955 Three Choirs Festival. It is scored for Soprano solo SATB chorus and Orchestra. It forms the best-known work of the British composer organist and scholar Geoffrey Bush (1920-1998) a lifelong friend of John Ireland and an ardent champion of English music. In Praise of Mary was based on various texts adoring Mary the Mother of Jesus. It is noted for its fresh textures lyrical melodies and beautiful craftsmanship making it as much a pleasure to sing as it is to listen to. Dedicated to the composer's wife.

Mary That Mother Mild is a setting of a song from the Kölner Gesangbuch 1623 arranged by composer Adrian Lucas for Unaccompanied SATB Choir.

This edition is based on the PWM edition of 2013, which was produced with the assistance of Anna Górecka and Miko?aj Górecki. A special feature of the Boosey publications is the new, alternative Latin sung text by Edward Tambling, which will be attractive to the many choirs who do not wish to sing in Polish. The Latin text is carefully crafted to fit Górecki's score and is both poetic and sensitive to the devotional aspect of the songs. English translations from the Polish are also included, for reference only. The three publications present the songs for sacred use according to devotional subject-matter. In concert performances the songs, or a selection of them, may be performed in any order and combination. Vol 1 contains six songs in praise of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The seven songs in vol 2 take the themes of Good Friday, the Crucifixion, The Cross of Christ and the Resurrection. Pärt's emotionally-charged Bogoróditse Djévo is a vibrant tribute to the Virgin Mary which is sung in the traditional Orthodox Church Slavic language and alludes to traditional Orthodox compositional practices. Occasionally the piece could be taken for historical liturgical music. Carl Orff devoted much of his life to the development of a philosophy of Music for Children, based on his belief that music is the natural outcome of speech, rhythm and movement. His ideas and pioneering work have had a major influence on music and dance education throughout the world and today that work continues under the guidance of leading teachers and educators in many countries. The five basic German volumes of 'Music for Children' by Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman were published between 1950 and 1954. Edition have since been published in Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Estonia, France, Ghana, Great Britain (including a special Welsh edition), Greece, Italy, Japan, Korea, Latin-America, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan and the USA.
