Growing in popularity across the United States, Mass for Our Lady is a worthy and dignified setting for use at any Sunday Mass. Its melodies are intuitive and assemblies learn the setting quite quickly and easily. Warner and Kirner have joined forces and created a setting that is simple and regal at the same time. More and more parish music directors are ordering this Mass setting and finding their parishioners singing it with vigor. Arranged for SATB choir, cantor, and assembly, the solid and satisfying keyboard parts can be augmented with guitar, string trio, C instrument, and handbells. Mass for Our Lady is proving adaptable in hundreds of parishes, especially those that have access to the additional instruments, specifically on festive occasions like Easter and Christmas, and the seasons and feasts that call for a setting that soars! Parish musicians tell us that it is appropriate in many pastoral settings, from that early Sunday morning Mass with keyboard and cantor to the principal Sunday Mass when all the “bells and whistles†are put to use. Highlights: Intuitive melodies that assemblies learn quickly and easily. A simple yet regal setting. Greatly adaptable—appropriate for Mass with keyboard and cantor and ideal for principal Sunday Mass with the addition of guitar, string trio, C instrument, and handbells. A setting that truly soars during festive occasions like Easter and Christmas.

Program Notes Elephant is, of course, inspired by the incredible mammals of the same name. Their column-like legs, long trunks, and massive presence will never cease to amaze; however, it's their trumpeting that makes them stand out as the instrumentalists of the animal kingdom! In this selection, an elephant's slow gate and general demeanor are represented by a methodical tempo and lumbering texture. Woodwinds will enjoy the opportunity to perform grace notes while Elephant also offers exposure to flams for young percussionists. At m. 33 the trumpets and horns recreate an elephant call after slipping brown paper bags, or lunch-bag mutes, over their bells (in their bells for horn players). For the trumpet players, the mutes can be enhanced with an additional balled-up piece of paper placed at the bottom of the bag prior to slipping it over the bell. Horns should ball up the bag itself and experiment with placement to create the most realistic tones without stopping the instrument. While specific pitches are noted, making the best elephant sounds should prioritized. Young students always look forward to experimenting with mutes, and this selection offers an inexpensive and creative way to do so at a young age. Note to the Conductor This piece can be used to introduce or reinforce the finer points of staccato playing. While many students know to play these notes short in length, they may need reminding that they should also be played lightly. This also may allow for opportunities in emphasizing contrasting articulation styles that are in this piece. Younger students will likely need a reasonable amount of practice in successfully using the lunch-bag mutes. Allowing additional rehearsal time for this is recommended.Program Notes Elephant is, of course, inspired by the incredible mammals of the same name. Splintered and rich in reference as Tippett's operas are in their music and in their text, they carry at their heart a glowing confidence in the power ofhuman beings to find a centre and, from that centre, to sing. In The Ice Break that confidence has a global reach. The settings are anonymous: an airportlounge, a hospital, the street. For the first time since The Midsummer Marriage, Tippett uses a chorus, here to represent the mass of humanity, whose divisions are pointed in the central cast: divisions between generations, between sexes, between races, between exile and native. Lev arrives in a new world to join his wife Nadia, who had emigrated with their baby son, Yuri. Also at the airport are Yuri's girlfriend Gayle and her friend Hannah, there to meet the black 'champion', Olympion together with his fans. Out of a series of violent tensions, individual and collective, there develops a riot in which Olympion and Gayle are killed and Yuri is near-fatally wounded. Nadia dies peacefully. During an interlude in which a group attempts a psychadelic 'trip', the messenger, Astron, is mistaken for God - a claim he dismisses ironically. Yuri is operated on by Luke, a young doctor, and, released from the cracking plaster, he finds reconciliation with his father.(Paul Griffiths)2 (2pic).2.ca.2 (Ebcl)*bcl.2.cbn-4.2.3.1-timp.7perc (s.d., t.d., b.d., slit dr., 5 tuned dr., jazz kit, timbales, bng., cym., sus.cym., w.bl., t.bl., cast., wh., tri., large tri., sleigh bells, flexatone, tam-tam, xyl., vib., glock., tub.bells, claves, guiro, glass chimes, bamboo wind chimes, metal bar, wind machine)-hrp.pno.cel.electric organ.egtr.bgtr-str.

With a lone cello and four percussionists, Leisner considers the horror and waste of war - the few who lust for power, the millions who suffer and die. A requiem mass is played by instruments, followed by a gathering of armies, an all-out conflict, and the heart-rending lament of survivors. The percussionists use a wide variety of materials, from vibraphone and marimba to drums, tubular bells, chains, thunder sheet, anvil, whip, and more.

Composed in 1981, this work is a setting of a sequence from the Mass for the Feast of St Thomas, found in the missal of the Hereford use. The text is a conventional hymn of praise but it is distinguished by a lively and attractive rhythm, and as this rhythm would have been lost in translation, I have set it in the original Latin. The work is in the form of theme and variations and is characterised by a gradual crescendo throughout. It begins very quietly with solo timpani and then the choir sing the theme in unison, unaccompanied by flutes, bells, timpani and lower strings.

Goemanne drew inspiration for his charming a cappella setting of this carol from its version in the 1966 edition of WLP‚ People‚ Mass Book. He consistently writes pieces that choirs love to sing and instrumentalists enjoy performing. This graceful arrangement features a solid translation by Michael Gannon paired with the tune DUTCH CAROL. Running sixteenth notes in the soprano line are reminiscent of distant bells as they sing, Hear the joy of Christians ringing.‚.
