By 2008, Sonatine de Giverny was being performed so frequently that I decided to write another piccolo piece as soon as an opportunity arose. Since Giverny is a study in French style, I knew the new piece must be in my own authentic American voice. That summer, Giverny was performed six times at the NFA convention as a mandatory competition piece, and I returned from the August 2008 convention all charged up to write something different for piccolo. In September, Kate Prestia-Schaub wrote to tell me about the International Piccolo Symposium's new composer competition. She proposed that if I write a new piccolo/piano piece, she would record a demo for me to submit to the competition, and she would submit applications to perform it at the 2009 IPS convention and NFA convention. What amazing timing! I set out to compose a flashy showpiece with a jazzy snap, lots of idiomatic scales and arpeggios, and a scary middle section, and by mid-October FLASH! was complete. Kate followed suit and all 3 wishes came true - FLASH! won first prize in the IPS composer competition, and she performed it both there and at NFA. In the meantime many other piccoloists have added the work to their repertoire, Cynthia Ellis wrote an article about it for Flute Talk magazine, and Walfrid Kujala commissioned a band accompaniment to premiere at NFA in 2010. Arsenal was composed for the 50th anniversary of the 'Harmonie van het Spoorwegarsenaal' [railroad arsenal], based in Mechelen (Belgium). Rather a stately concert march, it has beautiful themes and a broad melody in the trio. A mystifying question of versions surrounds the Italian: right after the world premiere in London, Mendelssohn is unsatisfied with his symphony. Since he no longer has the score with him, he writes it down afresh (except for the opening movement), but stops at three quarters of the way. In the meantime, trusted experts weigh in with their views. Fanny Hensel writes to her brother: I dont like the change in the first melody at all; why did you make it? Nevertheless, Felix continues to busy himself with the first movement, but ultimately finds no more time for it and leaves it primarily in the form of the complete early version of 1833, which is published posthumously and remains, to this day, a standard repertoire piece in all concert halls. The revised torso, in turn, was long ignored. It was published in this volume, yet it is clear that the three movements of the incomplete final version of 1834 were from the composers viewpoint not at all ready for publication, seeing that Mendelssohn had never critically reviewed them after having penned them.

Helmut Lachenmann wrote his Toccatina for the volume Studien zum Spielen Neuer Musik fur Violine (EB 8356) edited by Igor Ozim and published by Breitkopf & Hartel in 1986. No one could foresee back then that this Etude for violin solo would take on an active life of its own. The piece was first seen as a model of new string techniques, as David Alberman explained in his 1998 essay Beyond the Conventional, published in the journal The Strad. But in the meantime, Lachenmann's Toccatina, which truly does abound in unusual techniques, appears increasingly often on the programs of international festivals of contemporary music. This does justice to the work, which is, in effect, a delicate, fragile and introverted recital piece. Its title contains the word toccare (Italian for to touch); the composer took this definition literally and transposed it impressively into his piece.
