Sunday in the Park was written for tenor horn virtuoso Sheona White, and commissioned by her partner, Matt Wade, as a Christmas present. Composer Philip Sparke had known and admired Sheona’s playing for many years, having produced her firstsolo CD and written pieces for her previously. Both composer and performer are huge fans of the late Karen Carpenter, Sheona in part modelling her sound on the singer’s sultry voice; so it was decided that this new solo would be a piece which, whilstnot being a ‘Carpenters’ pastiche, paid tribute to their relaxed style and rich harmonic language. Sunday in the Park opens with an accompanied cadenza for the soloist, which leads to a gentle rhythmic melody with a laid-back feel. This istaken up by the band but the soloist sparks a change of mood by introducing a faster light rock interlude. This reaches a climax, at which point the music unwinds until the original mood returns. A variation on the original melody leads to a shortcadenza from the soloist, which brings the work to a peaceful close.

The atmosphere in a busy town park in the spring provided me with the inspiration for this piece. The style of this piece can be described as light music with baroque influences. These baroque influences directly point to the richly ornamental statues, which can be found in the park. Personal Note My high school band director, Clarence F. Wroblewski, died on November 24, 2018. In the 1950s, he was a pioneer in the field of public school instrumental music in Baltimore City. He was my mentor and my dear friend. It was his guidance and encouragement that set my young life's course on the path of music. Performance Notes Bay Shore Park is intended for a band with at least one year's training. It is also suitable for more experienced bands. It should be performed as a traditional American style concert march. A successful performance will require careful attention to balance in the Trio at m. 55. Additionally, balance will also be crucial at m. 103 where the Trio melody and the melody from m. 9 are heard together. The overall character of the music should be lively and carefree, much like a summer day at Bay Shore Park on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay.Personal NoteMy high school band director, Clarence F. Imagine a horse-drawn sleigh coasting leisurely through the park with blanket-coated passengers in tow. This music features a bright melody, a sparkly glockenspiel part, and jingle bells to mimic the sound of the sleigh. The melody is passed around to multiple sections in this light-hearted, and very playable addition to any holiday program.

Composer Gregory Singer's waltz depicting the calm oasis of Central Park is fresh and new, but somehow immediately recognizable. Students and audiences alike will be taken by this piece from the very first note. It is an excellent piece to teach young string players about waltz style. As a child, I enjoyed roller skating at an amusement park in Portland Oregon named Oaks Park. I remember the waltz music playing as the announcement came Couples only, or All skate. Years later in New York City, I awakened from sleep one morning with the theme of this waltz in my ears. It was so cheerful and corny that I asked myself You’ve got to be kidding me, where did this melody come from? I realized it was my original. I notated it immediately, and a few weeks later I added the second musical theme and named it Central Park Waltz. It reminds me of the skating rinks that I have enjoyed over the years.

This passionate and uplifting theme comes from one of Steven Spielberg’s most successful films Jurassic Park. As with many of Spielberg’s films the music has been supplied by John Williams and plays an extremely important role in creating the film’s atmosphere. The melody and orchestration makes this theme ideal for the sound of the brass band and this arrangement will not disapoint.
