Edward MacDowell can be regarded as the first great American composer, although he disliked the idea of being classified as any sort of musical nationalist. He composed a large number of orchestral works but it is the charming and unpretentious suite of musical miniatures, Woodland Sketches, that has survived as his best-known work, with To a Wild Rose being the most popular. Philip Sparke has expertly arranged this simple work for concert band.

The famous Golliwogg's Cakewalk is the final piece from Debussy's cycle Children's Corner which consists of 6 miniatures for piano, written for his daughter in the years 1906-1908.The style corresponds to that of ragtime, a dance which was in vogue around the turn of the century. In the middle section, he parodies several times the beginning of the opera Tristan and Isolde by Richard Wagner with whom Debussy had a rather ambiguous relationship. The present arrangement now allows musicians to play the popular movement in a version for melodic instrument with accompaniment.

An enticing rarity in the vocal literature, 1861 is a 5-minute work for unaccompanied voice – a miniature monodrama, sung a cappella. Okoye’s music and dramatic pacing are in tune with Whitman’s words about the Civil War erupting soon after Lincoln’s inauguration. Whitman’s opening lines, “Arm’d year! Year of the struggle! No dainty rhymes or sentimental love verses for you,†describe both the real world and Whitman’s self-referential poetry, and they are the starting blocks for Okoye’s powerful setting. 1861 was originally composed for solo Tenor, and later transposed for solo Contralto (also published separately).
