The best-known setting of the Requiem Mass before Mozart's unfinished work is by the celebrated opera composer Niccolo Jommelli. The Missa pro defunctis was composed in 1756, during Jommelli's time as Kapellmeister at the court of the Wurttemberg Duke Carl Eugen, on the occasion of the death of the Dowager Duchess Maria Augusta. The work went on to enjoy wide circulation and numerous further performances. Jommelli composed it in the Neapolitan style, with orchestral forces of just strings and basso continuo. The simple but effective choral movements are partly contrapuntal in the stile antico, and partly with solo/tutti alternation and numerous suspended dissonances, whilst in the solo parts the opera composer can be recognized. This beautiful sounding Missa pro defunctis is now published for the first time in a critical edition. Where sections are missing in Jommelli's composition, the Appendix contains settings by another composer from his circle, Nicola Sala. * The best-known setting of the Requiem Mass before Mozart * First critical edition * Effective choral movements with numerous suspended dissonances and solo/tutti alternation * Scored for small instrumental forces of strings and organ.

Franz Suppe wrote his Requiem not as a humanistic or pantheistic lament for the dead, but as a work created on the basis of firm Christian and Catholic faith. The fact that Suppe succeeded in writing a Requiem which remains within the theological-liturgical bounds without sacrificing the values of an autonomous work of art is perhaps the greatest - although hitherto unrecognized- achievement of this work. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4008500.

Cherubini owes his fame as a church composer primarily to the “Requiem in C minor†of 1817. It was held in extraordinarily high esteem by such composers as Beethoven and Schumann and served as a model for early 19th-century Requiem settings. Dispensing entirely with solo voices, it captivates with its rigorous formal concentration and its restrained use of musical resources in both choir and orchestra. This Urtext edition takes into account not only the autograph score with “spartitino†(additional instruments written in by hand) but also the first edition and a copyist’s manuscript.Rounding off this exemplary Urtext publication is an informative Introduction and a Critical Commentary (Eng).

Marco Enrico Bossi is the best-known Italian composer of organ music and virtuoso from the turn of the 19th to 20th century. He also composed secular and sacred choral music, ranging from unaccompanied settings to large-scale oratorio. In his Missa pro defunctis op. 83 for mixed chorus with harmonium or organ accompaniment ad libitum, he encapsulated the aims of the Cecilian movement, the 19th century movement for the restoration of sacred music, in a convincing musical form. Bossi wrote a first version of the Requiem Mass in 1892/93 with a colleague; in 1906 he replaced the other composer's sections with his own. This final authorized version has now been published in a first critical edition. One of the essential sacred choral works by Bossi, this Requiem deserves to be rediscovered.
