Billy Bennett (1887-1942) was a British comedian who specialised in comic monologues. He was born into the music hall industry and, after a decorated spell in the Army during the First World War, he began his own successful stage career in 1919. Often billed as Almost a Gentleman, he shot to fame at the 1926 Royal Command Performance (now the Royal Variety Shows), and remained a popular public figure for over a decade.

August Verbesselt's Three Monologues for flute alone, like much of his music, lies somewhere in between Bartók and Muczynski. His experimentations with dodecaphony and atonality, like Bartók, were directed towards making strange and different types of music appealing - and Verbesselt was intent on making music that was comprehensible to audiences. The deeper influences of Bartók can be heard clearly in the recitativ and night music of the second Monologue, written in near-free time. The first and third Monologues, however, hold more resemblance to Muczynski's Three Preludes - more aggressive, more Flemish, but with a rhythmic vitality that transforms less traditional ideas into intriguing, appealing patterns and dances. The high level of playing required also matches Muczynski's Preludes, and allows the Monologues to easily hold their own in recital or competition.

However, performances of the set by two singers instead of three, or of monologues as standalone pieces, are also permissible. The parts were originally written for soprano, mezzo-soprano, and baritone respectively, with alternate versions for mezzo-soprano, soprano, and tenor added later.These arias are well within reach for college students and young professionals, and draw on multiple musical traditions. Performer’s interpretations of the monologues will of course be enriched by reading the novels, and by watching the movies they inspired.
